Of all the critiques that have been written about Ella Fitzgerald, East Coast music critic Tony Mastrianni’s perhaps best defined her very special song stylings. “In the case of Ella Fitzgerald you have something unique. There continues to be no one like her, no one who uses a voice so completely like a musical instrument. . . . She can stray from the melody, sing around it, and ... 5 stars for the music, 10 CD's of remastered cross label Ella, must be the best collection available at present. An expensive collection housed in a medium size box with card CD covers and a very slim hard back book. Attractive, but this collection should have received a much more substantial book and while most CD collections use the card covers these days I am not a fan. Most quotes are creditted and the song credits are exhaustive but no authour is listed anywhere in the book, which is an issue, as I find the opening blurb disrespectful and absolutley worthless. Obviously the same team who compiled the book "Verve the sound of America" text by Richard Havers are also resposible for "The voice of Jazz" as text is repeated in both books.

There are no words to tell you all how great this set is.
There is only the music and Ella's sublime voice, remastered and
sounding better than ever.
TEN discs of amazing Ella singing and scatting.
I am the Archivist of Ella's Estate and I was completely blown away
by this set. The amount of work that went into it is crazy.

More stars, please! At least ten - or even A MILLION! This is one of the most beautiful boxed sets of music and music history that i have ever seen. (And I do this kind of stuff for a living). I keep this on my desk just to admire the art work. And the music!! MAGIC. Excellent remastering, Ella sounds fabulous (well, she always did, but the quality on this set is superb). Highly recommended.

Ella Fitzgerald the Voice of Jazz 1 Jan 2014

I bought this as a present. My brother loves Ella and was intrigued by the extensive liner notes, the breadth of the material covering here career is excellent. If you love Ella you can't do much better because it is pretty all-encompassingfrom beginning to end of her career. If you love Ella, you'll love this. If you like Ella you'll probably find you like her better than you thought. She was one of a kind.

Ten Cds and Hardcover Book--Fantastic! 7 Jan 2014
By Leila C. Shapiro - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
One of the outstanding items in my collection of 9,000 iTunes, Ella Fitzgerald "The Voice Of Jazz" exceeded my expectations. The fine editing of the book along with ten wonderful Cds is amazing! The many songs from her songbooks such as Gershwin,Porter,Berlin,Ellington and Arlen are worth the price by themselves. In addition she sings with Chick Webb as an 18 year old, and then you hear her voice mature over the years as she is recorded with Basie,Nelson Riddle,Frank DeVol,The Ink Spots,Mills Brothers, etc. The recordings are very high quality and give a complete perspective of the career of this wonderful singer. Highlights are Mack The Knife from Ella In Berlin and the JATP sessions. I am thrilled to own this collection. Ed Shapiro Baltimore
