About the Artist

The English gothic rock band Fields of the Nephilim formed in 1984. The band's name refers to a Biblical race of giants or angel-human hybrids, known as the Nephilim. The band's seminal sound has proved highly influential, especially in the genre of gothic rock. 'Elizium', their third studio album, was originally released in 1990. The album is considered to be one of their best, consisting of a couple of lengthy pieces that showcase their ability to write textured, loud pieces of rock that are still goth but at the same time transcend such artificial limitations to create their own sound. The intro for the third song of the album, 'At the Gates of Silent Memory', features spoken lines by Aleister Crowley. The lines are excerpts from Crowley's poem 'At Sea', recorded in 1920.

To see that this album has been re-issued on vinyl has made me want to write a review. You've been drawn to read this that i write here and it is strongly hoped that you will take it from me that you would do well to purchase a copy either on vinyl or CD. I bought this the day it came out hours before i went to see them play the first night of the Elizium tour in Bristol. I did not get a chance to hear it before seeing them play it live and that was one experience i will never forget. Had i the time to play the LP then i would have missed the gig! Simple as that.

From the opening build up and the segues that follow, this recording is more than mere music on vinyl and bits of plastic. I have had the good fortune to introduce many people to this particular album and none have been disappointed. It truly is something not many words can describe adequately. Here is something that only experience can offer.

A lot of people are 'put off' by the vocals of Carl McCoy apparently. I do realise that his singing comes from a place that not many can achieve and this makes the synergie of voice and music even more in harmony rather than discord.

The majority of this album is a soundtrack to a place that a lot of us often wonder about i am sure. Some call it heaven, you get the picture!

The albums closing sound is the epic Wail Of Sumer/And There Will Your Heart Be Also. I would not begin to do this an injustice by attempting to describe, it would be ignorant of me. You should hear this. I do hope it will take you to places that i have thought about when hearing the sound. There is a painting by the artist John Martin titled The Plains Of Heaven. To see this painting in front of you in the gallery whilst hearing the sound of Wail Of Sumer/And There Will Your Heart Be Also is something i hope someone reading this will get to experience also. They belong together.

However you obtain this album then i wish you an experience that you too may find impossible to write about like i have failed to do so here. It truly is an experience.

Ethereal mood music at its best... 24 May 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The foreboding intro to this album blasts into a moody goth-guitar riff that accompanies the well matured Voice of Carl McCoy, the band's long time lead vocalist. If you have heard their early "Burning the Fields" e.p., then you know what I mean...As the music continues, it slows to a perfectly strung along series of haunting melodies that lead you through the first side's beautifully painted images of ancient mesopotamian romance. Typical Goth themes pervade throughout the rest of the album, such as, anguished cries for love, darkly ethereal synthesizer riffs etc... There is also an occult/pagan bent to the artwork inside the cover that ought to satisfy the amateur alchemist inside everyone. If you ever wanted to experience that otherwordly feeling as you enjoy music, you will most certainly not be denied when hearing this recording, it delves deep into your passionate alter-ego and evokes an almost euphoric trance upon the first listening. So in other words, if you want low risk of being let down, buy this album...

Simply a great work of art 11 Jun 1999

This CD is timeless - I have been listening to it for almost seven years now, and it's still as fresh, complex and atmospheric as the the first time I heard it. It is one of my desert island discs along with "GONE TO EARTH", "WORLD GONE WRONG", "ANIMALS", "WITHIN THE REALM OF A DYING SUN" and "LOVELESS"

Awesome. Buy This! 3 Jan 1999

I have been into Fields for about 7 years and let me say, this is not only their best CD but probably my favorite Cd ever. If you like older Fields, Sisters, Pink Floyd, This Mortal Coil, etc... You will looove this. Every song flows into the next one in a story of sorts. Well crafted musically and very interesting lyrics.
