Fantastic book! 7 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
I love my older paperback edition of this book (the original) because you can put it in your knitting bag and carry it anywhere. But I am also delighted to have this updated version (for what would have been Mrs. Zimmermann's 100 birthday) because of the full color pates, extra notes and the directions for the adult version of the Baby Sweater I've been making for years (upscaled by Mrs. Zimmermann's daughter).

If you can get a copy of this hardback be sure to do so, even if you have the older edition. This one will last long enough to pass down through several generations if cared for properly, long after the paperback has gone. The color photos provide more inspiration then the older black and whites and are done in more neutral colors than many knitting books published in the 1970's, so hopefully will not "date" as easily (sometimes it is hard to decide if you like a basic pattern when it is presented in shocking lime green and electric orange...).

I think this book (and all of EZ's books)rate five stars (even higher if I could do that).

A true Almanac 28 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
This is the third edition of this book I have owned. The last two were borrowed and not returned.

I really don't mind though, as it shares the wisdom! If you are looking for a book of instructions then look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you are prepared to enter into almost a conversation whilst learning how to knit the items on the front cover, and a million and one other things as well, this is for you.
Erudite and informative, the patterns are accurate and inspiring. By the time you get to the end you will have the confidence to take on anything! AND it's in hardback, with aditional introductions and patterns, what more could a person ask?

A worthwhile purchase, even if you already have the original book 11 Sep 2010
By Cynthia Carter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I already have the older edition of the Almanac, so I was of two minds whether it was worthwhile to spend the money on the commemorative edition. I am so glad I did! Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's intro is exactly what I would want to say about Elizabeth Zimmermann, except that she says it so much better than I ever could. And the book itself is much better in many ways. The new color photos are gorgeous, and I love that they mimic the layout of the original photos. The samples are beautiful in themselves, and really show off what can be done with EZ's ideas with all of the wide variety of yarns we have available to us now. The larger format and larger print make the volume much more readable, and I find I am slowing down to actually enjoy EZ's writing and stories, instead of skipping from project to project.

I would recommend purchasing this book to anyone, even if they already own the earlier edition.

Updated Knitter's Almanac 23 Oct 2010
By goodfruit - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Its great to see this knitting classic updated in a larger hardback version, with larger print, color pictures, and some things re-knit in todays yarns. EZ fans everywhere will want to have this new version! The Almanac features lovely things to knit for each month of the year with accompanying story and instructions from Elizabeth. It feels like sitting around and knitting with your beloved grandmother.

Stephanie Pearl-McPhee writes the new introduction and EZ's daughter adds some relevant clarifications here and there. Otherwise, its the same EZ instructions we've come to know and love, the long written out version and the "pithy" version. The charts are still hand-drawn, I'm surprised they didn't update those too.

Looks great! 18 Feb 2011
By Melanie L. Lietz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've had this book in paperback for years but couldn't resist it in hard cover. It looks and feels great. The photos are now in updated colors and look beautiful. The slightly larger font sure doesn't hurt! Also, there is a bonus pattern that I would like to make. EZ fans will love this book. If you want to learn to trust your knitting, this book is for you. Even if you're a brand-new knitter, buy this book and let it inspire you.
