Book Description

25 July 2010
'Gloriana', 'Faerie Queene', 'Queen Bess' are just some of the names given to Elizabeth I, the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. But the name for which she is perhaps best remembered and which best explains why Elizabeth was the last of the Tudor monarchs, was the 'Virgin Queen'. But how appropriate is that image? Were Elizabeth's suitors and favourites really just innocent intrigues? Or were they much more than that? Was Elizabeth really a woman driven by her passions, who had affairs with several men, including Thomas Seymour, while he was still the husband of her guardian Catherine Parr, and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester - a man adjudged to have been the great love of her life? And, are the rumours of Elizabeth's illegitimate children true? Was the 'Virgin Queen' image a carefully thought out piece of Tudor propaganda? Historian Philippa Jones, author of the acclaimed "The Other Tudors", challenges the many myths and truths surrounding Elizabeth's life and reveals the passionate woman behind the powerful and fearless 'Virgin Queen'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could be better 10 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Having read numerous biographies about 'The Virgin Queen' I was interested to read Ms Jones version of events, however came away sadly disappointed. The overall book is 'rushed', facts are not detailed enough, important events and influences are skipped over, and there are certainly some errors (for one it is a documented fact that Amy Robsart was older than Robert Dudley!), I had the feeling that Ms Jones on occasions was using information from fictional books as her sources rather than genuine evidence or research. The most preposterous suggestion that the Earl of Essex could have been Elizabeth's son did not add any credibility to this book. Overall, I would agree with another reader's comment here, that rather than reading the work of a genuine historian, this was more in line with a student's dissertation.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing 20 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was a little disappointing - the majority simply re-told Elizabeth's biography. To be fair, this aspect of the book was done accurately, and was well researched, but the chapters on the possible candidates for her illegitimate children were rather rushed and lacked substance.

The three family trees at the end of the book were unreadable on the Kindle version - despite increasing the font size to maximum.

Throughout, I felt that I was reading a history student's dissertation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Semper Eadem 11 May 2012

This is a good read, well researched and written but it lacks a certain something. It has the interesting premise that Elizabeth I 'might' have had illegitimate child(ren) with Thomas Seymour or Robert Dudley. The book is mostly a biography about Elizabeth I (that doesn't really add any more to the plethora of books already out there)with the occasional supposition of how/where/when Elizabeth might have had an illicit secret birth.
I enjoyed it but it would have been a better read for me if more detail had been paid to the premise of the book instead of rehashing the history aspect.
