Whilst working on a variety of '9-5' jobs over the years, I came up with plenty of ideas which I thought would make good books. The hardest thing was breaking through into the literary world.
My mentor in the world of writing is Paolo Hewitt. I first met Paolo properly in 2000. Since then we have collaborated on three books. The first, The Fashion of Football, was voted as one of the top 50 football books of all time by 442 magazine. I came up with this idea in the late 90s and tried unsuccessfully to get it to a publishing house. Once Paolo got involved however, this all changed due to his knowledge as to how it all worked and we got a deal with Maistream
The Fashion of Football is currently out of print but is available as a eBook. A six month exhibition based on the book T ran at The National Football Museum in Manchester til August 2013
Our second book, The Mumper, was published through Lulu.com in 2007. A slow burner it took off very nicely and was sold to Orion in 2011 and then made into a feature length film, called 'Outside Bet' which hit the cinemas in the UK on April 27th 2012. Starring Bob Hoskins, Jenny Agutter, Calum MacNab and Phil Davies. Distributed by Universal Pictures.
My third book with Paolo was published in May 2012 and is called The A-Z of Mod (Prestel). This looks at the history and influences of the Moderninst movement over the past fifty years.
I have also had two local history books published called 'Walworth Through Time vols 1&2 (Amberley)' co-written with Darren Lock. These look at the area of SE17, and have sold extremely well locally.
My new solo novel 'Elizabeth, Peter and Me is due out on November 18th 2013
