Product Description

Trio of big-budget Tudor dramas. In 'Elizabeth' (1998), it's 1554, and England is ruled by the fervently Catholic Queen Mary (Kathy Burke), whose persecution of Protestants even extends to her own half-sister, Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett). When Mary dies, Elizabeth succeeds to the throne, but finds her country under threat from the Scots, French and Spanish. Although conducting an affair with Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester (Joseph Fiennes), Elizabeth is urged by her advisors to wed and produce an heir. Meanwhile, plots against her are being hatched by the Catholic bishops, and Elizabeth soon becomes the target of an assassination attempt. In 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' (2007), Blanchett reprises her role as the 'Virgin Queen' in this sequel to the Oscar-nominated 'Elizabeth'. This time round Elizabeth has to contend with the rising power of Spain, as Philip II (Jordi Molla) readies an armada for invasion, intent on returning England to Catholic influence. While her trusty servant Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush) works tirelessly to protect her from numerous plots, Elizabeth discovers she has a potential weakness in her fondness for Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen). Finally, 'The Other Boleyn Girl' (2008) is a fictionalised account of the life of Mary Boleyn (Scarlett Johansson) who was mistress to King Henry VIII (Eric Bana) before he married her sister, Anne (Natalie Portman). Set during one of the most dramatic periods in British regal history, the narrative focuses on the relationship and rivalry between the two Boleyn girls and the power game being played by their family in which the sisters are mere pawns. When Mary is ousted in favour of Anne, she leaves the King's Court to marry a commoner, but is compelled to return when her sister embarks on a reckless plan to try and save herself from ruin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb - and surprising 27 Mar 2009

Overall, this is a great package - physically very nicely packaged and you can't really fault the two "Elizabeth" films. But the most pleasant surprise for me was "The Other Boleyn Girl". As soon as this film came out I wanted to watch it, but was almost put of buying it by all of the negative reviews on Amazon about the plot being too complex. So, when I came to watch it I sat with grim determination to follow what was going on - but after a few minutes I realised that I really needn't have bothered as there's nothing complex about it at all. In fact it's one of the best films I've seen in a long time. I'm sure there may have been a few liberties taken with the historical facts, but nothing blindingly obvious (certainly not according to my schoolboy knowledge of history!) - instead it's not only entertaining, but also a fascinating insight into little known aspect of an incredible period in the country's evolution. And despite the "Hollywood" aspect the entire casting and acting is excellent. Everyone else I've now spoken to about it thinks its wonderful too, so I'd highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elizabeth/Elizabeth II/The Other Boleyn Girl 10 Mar 2009

This trio makes excellent watching with hours of fascinating insight into Britain's past. Very well researched fashionable clothing of the times, hairdos and superb acting all round. Political intrigue at its best - has anything changed apart from the beheadings?

Im a fan of English history- Elizabeth has to be my favorite, i love movies like this have nearly all of the ones that were made- Cate Blanchett plays her role well and so do the other cast members in there different roles- i liked Geoffery Rush and his potrail of Sir Francis Walsingham- enjoyable film all the same- the same reason in buying is that i got the other Boleyn Girl- which of Course gives the story of Henry leaving the Catholic Church for Anne Boleyn and her struggle to give him a male heir that she soley promised if he divorced Catherine of Argon - i enjoyed this collection, Gr8 buy.

Amazing price for these three great DVDs! Although these may not be the most historically accurate films around, they make for very good watching and it is a well worthwhile purchase.
