Product Description

This elegant box set includes:

Cranford: This BBC dramatisation of three of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels captures the small absurdities and tragedies in the lives of the people of Cranford, a small rural Cheshire town, inhabited largely by women. This is a community that runs on cooperation and gossip, at the very heart of which are the daughters of the former rector: Miss Deborah Jenkyns and her sister Miss Matty. But domestic peace is constantly threatened in the form of financial disaster, imagined burglaries, tragic accidents, and the reapparance of long-lost relatives.

North And South: A powerful adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's feisty and passionate love story, set across the social divides in the changing world of Victorian industrial society. Margaret Hale is one of literature's most original heroines: a southerner from a country vicarage newly settled in the industrial northern town of Milton. In the shock of her move, she misjudges charismatic cotton mill-owner John Thornton, whose strength of purpose and passion are a match for her own pride and wilfulness. When the workers of Milton call a strike, Margaret takes their side, and the two are brought into deeper conflict. As events spiral out of control, Margaret - to her surprise - begins to fall in love with Thornton...

Wives And Daughters: After years spent as a widower, village doctor Mr Gibson has decided to remarry; something for which his rather naive daughter, Molly, is wholly unprepared. Molly's world is soon overturned by the arrival of an unwanted stepmother and a bewitching, beautiful stepsister, Cynthia. In spite of the circumstances of their acquaintance and of being so entirely different from one another, the two girls instantly form a close relationship. But it is a friendship that is put to the test when they look set to become rivals in love. Matters are further complicated when a dangerous secret emerges from Cynthia's past in which she entangles Molly, with serious consequences for them both...

Synopsis

Collection of three Elizabeth Gaskell adaptations. Includes:

Cranford, a small, idyllic Northern English town—where the residents are coping with a sea of change that includes a new railway network that threatens to unleash a tide of immigrant workers that the locals fear will reduce their town to lawlessness...

North and South - Margaret Hale, a southerner, has newly moved to the industrial town of Milton. When the workers of a cotton mill strike, Margaret immediately takes their side, already displaying a strong dislike for the mill's owner, John Thornton. As the conflict between Margaret and Thornton intensifies, however, Margaret finds herself doing the unthinkable...falling in love.

Wives and Daughters tells the story of Molly Gibson, the daughter of a small-town doctor, and her life after her father remarries... Molly and her new stepsister become close friends until they become love rivals...

This is without doubt one of the very best period dramas ever done by the BBC - its full of humanity, our strenghts and failings, beutifully acted and presented - it must have cost a fotune in costumes and equipment - a thoroughly satisfying experience to watch.

....you can hardly do better than this. A litany of British acting talent, strong storylines, really tremendous production values, this is very hard to beat. Cranford is more gentle and sunny than North and South which is darker and grittier but does give the lie to the idea that this type of drama cannot deal with tough issues. Universal themes which cross the centuries, highly recommended.

I only wished to buy north and south but saw this collection. I had heard of wives and daughters and did want to see it so I brought it as it was a good price. I was delighted with all the dvds. It turned me into an Elizabeth Gaskell fan. I was a bit reluctant with Cranford as I am quite young but found it incredibly funny and entertaining. North and South is a wonderful love story whilst Wives and daughters is also a love story but played out differently with more depth into the relationship of step mother and step daughter.

Cranford: Is a wonderful warm and inviting story about a small town called Cranford. A group of social single women who all believe that they have the answer to all the problems that a small town has. The town has a small secret that has them all worried about how it will affect them all. It all turns out well and there is a lovely ending to the story.

North & South: Is a very moving story about a daughter of a middle-class parson, Margaret Hale, as we see the many changes she must go through before she changes her attitude towards the mill owner. I love Elizabeth Gaskell's stories, they are so warm, intelligent, moving and always surprising the viewer.

Wives & Daughters: Is a moving story about a very loving daughter whose life changes when her father who is a widower is remarried. The stepmother and her daughter cause a huge amount of grief for the Molly and her father.
Molly's life takes on a new meaning when things are sorted out.

Three of my favourite Gaskell novels brought to life on the screen by the good old BBC. I would still recommend reading the books though because there is so much more to them.

What can I say. The collection of dvds is great, BBC at it's best. All of the dvds are brilliant and it is fantastic to wile away the hours in nostalgia (it was never really this romantic!). A great gift for romantics!
