Perfect for finding the motivation over winter,
By
This review is from: Elite Performance: Cycling: Successful Sportives (Elite Performance) (Paperback)
Many cycling books touch on the subject of Cyclo Sportives such as the increasingly popular L'Etape du Tour and some even go as far as to tell you how to to train for one. Unfortunately, this extends only to what amounts to lots of mileage, with no real reason as to why. Nor do they cover any of the specific points for the sportive newcomer to consider.
If you are absolutely BRAND NEW to cycling (ie you have only just bought the bike!) then something a bit more basic and straightforward such as the LANCE ARMSTRONG PERFORMANCE PLAN would be a better start. Once you've read that and gone out and done more than a 20 miler (both acievable on the same day!!) then you should take a look at this book. It covers EVERYTHING the aspirant sportivist needs to know about training and preparing to put him (or her)self through the several hundred miles these events usually clock up. It includes training plans for the rookiw and advances cyclist alike which will prepare you over the winter months for the summer sportive season and also covers in great depth what you need to know about nutrition. In fact, few books I've read achieve this level of detail for this specific subject matter and its worth a read for this alone. It also covers the 'handy hints' a rookiw sportivist would need to know for his or her first sportive. All in all, its very thorough. I would DEFINATELY recommend this book to anyone who is looking to enter this type of endurance event next summer (this is written as at Oct). It will supply you with the requisite motivation to get out and spend hours on end on your bike over the cold and wet winter months in order to ensure you are fit enough to enjoy your event. That said, could I say anything negative about it? Well, YES, actually. The authors seem to have a professional sports coaching and fitness testing business which is repeatedly referred to throughout the text. Is this because they wish to merely substantiate their credentials or is it an effort to advertise themselves and thus the book serves as a marketing tool for the business? Either way, the necessary info and knowledge is all their and should not stop you from buying this book.

A great introduction for sportive riders,

This review is from: Elite Performance: Cycling: Successful Sportives (Elite Performance) (Paperback)
Highly recommended for all aspiring sportive riders, especially those planning to do the Etape, which the book covers in some detail.
May be a little bit daunting for novices, and possibly a little too concise for the very experienced; but for the vast majority, it should be the main source of information required. Covers pretty much all areas including very well written sections on training programmes, nutrition, and race day preparation. I did feel that a little bit more emphasis could have been placed on training programmes though - this section could have been a bit more comprehensive. However, it's still better than the vast majority of plans that you'll find from trawling through the net or from other sources. A word of warning - training begins in October for your summer sportive!

This review is from: Elite Performance: Cycling: Successful Sportives (Elite Performance) (Paperback)
Having done a few sportives, I decided a little more information on the subject would help my sport. And I am glad I did. I found this book very informative and laid out nicely and all subject were kept simple. The basis of the book revolves around Sports test and finding your Heart Rate Zones and how to train within them. Other subjects which are often overlooked are also covered in detail. All this makes up to a book that you can dip into at anytime.
I enjoyed this book so much I used it as a base for my 2010 cycle challenge, The Etape du Tour 2010 Pau - Col du Tourmalet with its 112miles and 4167m climbing. Having done my research on the ride, I commenced my training in January 2010, and over the coming months my pre-ride preparation and race strategy was based on this book. To cut a long review short, I easily completed the Etape du Tour ride despite a puncture 3 miles from the top of the Col du Tourmalet. At no point during the ride did I feel out of my depth and there is no doubt in my mind that this book went a long way in helping me completing my first Etape du Tour ride. The author, co-author and contributions from the cycling professionals have done a fine job in presenting this book.
