5.0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly clever and outrageously witty! 9 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is an absolutely incredible story. Hilariously, side-splittingly witty, which isn't always easy in a book. Yet Kate masterfully chooses her words, weaving an incredible story with plot twists where you least expect them. (I'm looking at you, Chapter 28!)

Thank you Kate Russell, for a truly outstanding novel!

Elite Dangerous: Mostly Harmless is the fast-paced adventure of Commander Angel Rose, a struggling space pilot and trader striving to make her own way in the galaxy. Burdened by wealthy and interfering parents as well as her own ability to make good decisions, Angel finds her life taking a path she didn't expect or want.

I have wanted to read this book for some time and I was excited to finally be able to do so as soon as it was published! It is set in the Elite Dangerous universe, a SpaceSim computer game that will be released late in 2014, which is the reboot of a franchise that has been around since the mid-1980s. As a self-confessed science fiction fan, this was the main source of my excitement, but I was also nervous of the unknown, afraid that it would be a disappointment and wouldn't live up to my expectations, as the book loaded.

Fortunately, I was not to be disappointed at all! From the moment it was available, Mostly Harmless was difficult to even put it down! I fell asleep in bed reading the book on the first evening - to the great amusement of my wife - and I spent the whole next day at work resenting the fact I was working and itching to get back to finding out what would next happen to Angel Rose!

The writing is witty, charming and engaging, with many subtle and some none-too-subtle references and nods to other works of science fiction and fantasy, with a healthy dose of Britishness throughout. This sensibility is perhaps best expressed by the primary planet of the novel, Slough (also a suburban town west of London) whose heavy gravity and depressingly hard industry provide an acute poke at British suburbia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do not try to bend the spoon... 17 Jun. 2014

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Who doesn't dream of owning a little cargo ship of their own and zipping about the galaxy?

Had time life allowed I could happily have devoured this in one sitting. A very enjoyable story, with some well rounded, and multidimensional characters. A number of references to some Sci-Fi classics brought more than one welcome smile to my face.

Needless to say I'm off to pay for beta access to the game, and will be reading the other Elite ebooks available.

Bravo Kate, I look forward to the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars full of surprises! 9 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I don't quite know where to start this review as Mostly Harmless manages to pack so much in. Its got comedy, gore, surrealism, action, adventure, technology, plot twists, genuine warmth, a tight crew of great characters and more.

Our hapless hero races about from disaster to calamity all the while trying really hard to do the right thing whilst trying to decide what is the right thing? And what does she want to do with anyway?

Meanwhile she gets shot at, tied up, drinks too much, humiliated, conned, tricked, rescued and not surprisingly after all that told off by her parents!

I think the best compliment I can pay is it's what would happen if the (sadly) late Rik Mayall had been cast by Douglas Adams and told to go and get into trouble in space.

Please go and buy this book - you'll love it

That pretty much describes the life of the heroine of this great story, at least at the beginning. Kate Russell manages to capture the grittiness of life, with a good dose of wit and humour thrown in for good measure, all set in a thoroughly believable and grounded vision of the future. The main character, Angel Rose, is well developed and I found myself feeling great empathy for the situations she finds herself in; even whilst chuckling away to myself. The realisation of the Elite universe is vivid and manages to tie in well with the atmosphere of both the original and the new "Elite:Dangerous" incarnation.

I backed this through the original Kickstarter, investing much more than it costs to buy the book here. It was well worth it though, since not only is this a brilliant romp, Kate has taken great care to keep the promises she made to her backers in ways that are entertaining, and appropriately gruesome and humiliating!

I sincerely hope this is not the last we see of Angel, nor of Kate's fiction. I'll be in the queue for any future books!

This is Kate's first published novel but you surely wouldn't be able to tell.

Really enjoyable romp around a couple of star systems. Based and linked into the nascent Frontier Developments game, "Elite: Dangerous" and set in the Universe created by Messrs Bell and Braben back in 1984 with the original Elite game and "The Dark Wheel" novella this is very much a character based book with a ironic sense of humour akin but different to that of Douglas Adams. Somewhat less allegorical than Adam's style with the ironic humour more to do with the characters' traits and personalities.

Although a good length, it feels like and extended short story. This is not a criticism as it's a fun read.

Beware, there are plenty of expletives which, although in character, are probably not what you'd like your 10 year old to pick up.

I won't go into any of the story as that will spoil it for you, but beware of the poetry.

I found the plot too all over the place and the characters un-relatable. While not a bad book by any stretch of the imagination definitely an acquired taste.
