  • As the music plays, players tap the screen, trace rhythmic patterns and keep the beat as the story unfolds on the top screen
  • Every scene is accompanied by rump-shaking tunes, but players have to keep the Elite Beat Agents grooving. The worse players do, the worse the story might end up
  • Rhythm games have come and gone, but no one has ever seen anything like the Elite Beat Agents. Whether they’re helping a lost dog find its way home or helping a babysitter charm a hunky football player, no crisis is too weird

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There’s always a huge ranges of games from Japan that are never released in the West, but usually there’s a very good reason for that: either they’re not very good or the concepts and references just get lost in translation. One of the few exceptions is Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. The original name translates as Go! Fight! Cheer Squad and involves a trio of male cheerleaders trying to help ordinary citizens in a variety of bizarre situations. Although many loved the soundtrack it didn’t really translate for a global audience so this is the Westernised remake.

Each of the game’s missions are portrayed on the top screen via some gorgeously drawn comic book sequences involving such calls for help as a shipwrecked Paris Hilton lookalike and a weatherwoman trying to make it sunny. At this point the EBA (now part of a secret government agency) burst onto the bottom screen and you have to help them dance sufficiently well to then encourage their charge to victory.

This is essentially a rhythm action game where you tap sequenced markers in time with the music on the touch screen or occasionally follow a slider along on its path or spin a wheel. You have a steadily decreasing power bar, which is only kept at bay by successful hitting your marks. The way this integrates with the music, the agents dancing and the comic strip is wonderful and assuming you like enough of the songs (everything from Sk8er Boi to YMCA) this is the best music game on any system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun + Tapping + Earth, Wind & Fire = Good Times 13 Aug 2007

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I want to start out by saying in no way is this a substandard version of the Japanese original, Ouendan. The flaws have been ironed and the western flair really adds a lot for me. Yes, this game is absurd, outrageous and extremely wacky, but it's so much fun tapping out the beats to some catchy tunes!

Sure, the game is challenging, but for the newcomers you get a literal helping hand to show you what to do, and there's a gradual progression as songs get increasingly more difficult. That's not a problem though, because you'll rise up through the ranks nice and quickly and eventually you'll be stepping out with some insanely fast rythms!

In short, this game is pure fun and it really does have that addictive quality that makes you keep coming back to better your old high scores and unlock some extra tracks! Let the good times uuh, spin!

4.0 out of 5 stars Let's keep tp the beat 15 Feb 2009

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Like many i bought this because it looked different and because of all the reviews, and i have to say i love this game!
Okay, solving various problems by dancing does seem a bit ridiculous, but hey, this isn't real life, and it is brilliant fun. You start on breezin' then move to cruisin and then sweatin, the level i'm currently on. I love the comic strip animation and in no way is it bad. It is usually funny, but mission 12 nearly made me cry, so it can go to many levels without trying to go overboard. It is bright and colourful and very addictive- i was playing it in bed, something i never do!
There are a few slight niggles with this game- the first being that as you dance, there is action going on at the top of the screen, which can be very distracting, especialy in the later levels where it gets harder and something catches your eye. You only have to take a quick glance and you lose the beat. The second being how hard it gets- it happens quite quickly and throws you in the deep end before you know it. I found the last two songs were very difficult on breezin level and it took me ages to do. I'm now stuck on mterial girl because of the sudden jump- lucky i love thisbgame so much!
There are three tips i'd like to give you- buy screen protectors because you will end up bashing the screen. These should be the first thing you buy anyway for games like zelda, nintendogs and drawn to life where a lot of rubbing is required. Second- after you play the game, re-calibrate the screen because i haven't done it and it sometimes doesn't respond, so i'll be doing it shortly. Lastly, don't rely on the circles- follow the beat of the music. Before you know it, you'll be tapping along and not even notice the circles. Just let the music take you!
I love this game- it's different to everything else on offer and so much fun. You'll be trying to beat your best score before you know it. So come on, let's dance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another DS 'must have' 10 Oct 2007

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Elite Beat Agents is another one of those DS games that are easy to learn, tough to master and appeal to people of all ages. You will have a lot of fun with this game and it's the kind of thing you can pass around on Christmas day. The challenge level is just right and oh boy is it addictive. This is one of the few games with an `expert' mode that you will actually want to play through once you've beaten the normal setting.
For my money the songs and the humour are more fun in Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! (the original Japanese version of the game). But Elite Beat Agents is just as entertaining to play, cheaper then an imported game and has English menus.
Hardcore gamers will love the challenge. Everybody else will enjoy tapping their DS along to the music. Either way this is one of those games that is definitely worth getting hold of.
