Product details

Product Description

Bound by an early marriage to Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, Elisabeth in Bavaria spent most of her unhappy life branded as a selfish and self-indulgent woman. The reality was somewhat different: the 'adoring' husband betrayed and neglected her, access to her children was virtually denied her and her life made wretched by her scornful mother-in-law, the powerful Archduchess Sophie. Elisabeth's efforts on behalf of the Magyars, which were of inestimable value to the Emperor, went largely unremarked, while the true reasons for her defection from the Viennese Court were wilfully misunderstood. Her spirit eventually crushed by the mysterious deaths of her cousin, King Ludwig II of Bavaria, and her son Crown Prince Rudolf, she abandoned court life altogether and aimlessly wandered the earth, dogged by ill-health, until an assassin's dagger released her from her sorrows in Geneva 1898.
