This is elegant, eloquent, beautifully crafted pop from a band that always deserved better. Wry lyrics combined with clever melodies remind you that this is how all pop music should be.

Witty, eloquent, sophisticated pop. This album remains as fresh today as when it was recorded in 1982. Typical lyrics... "My old girl's a Duchess And she wears a Hartnell frock She's picked me out a Cheltenham girl Of Suffolk breeding stock"

The monochrome set are one of the best kept secrets of the music world. The lead singer and major songwriter Bid is one of the greatest and most consistant songwriters of our generation. Word is slowly getting out but more people need to know, listen in then spread the word.
You can't go wrong with a monochrome set album, yet Eligable bachelors is the monochrome set at their very very best. Catchy hooks interlaced with lavish Jazz cords are tied together by Bids educated wit.
One of the greatest albums ever, simply buy it and have your world enriched!

Once upon a time the monochrome set... 16 Jan 2002

You enjoyed "tommorow will be too long"(in fact "strange boutique"&"Love zombies"). Well, it's time for you to buy their third album, unfortunatly the last one with genious guitarist Lester Square (some people play accoustic guitar, some others play électric guitar, and Lester Square play intelligent guitar) but be glad, one more release as good as the others 's waiting for you, rendez-vous at "Volume, contrast, brillance"...

Great stuff 9 Dec 2000

This has got to be one of my all time fav albums. The fact that I say "albums" tells you how long I've had a copy. These guys were an amazing breath of fresh and wacky britishness and it's too bad they never made a bigger splash this side of the pond. If you're looking for something just a bit whimisical, a bit mocking, but oh so proper-this is the album for you. I promise, you won't find another like it. (Pair it with an early Clash album and you've got a nice surreal range of Brit rock from a bygone era.)
