I have two of these, both mainly used on G4 Macs. They reduce the encoding time of an average movie from 14 hours (on my 1.2 Ghz iBook) to real time. I have also used them on my wife's (Intel) MacBook, which results in conversions done in a third of real time. The original software was rather flaky (maybe the reason for the negative comments above), but it was quickly patched to improve reliability and allow more control over the encoding process. It is possible to encode individual episodes from a DVD using the enclosed software. If you already have a fast Mac, it may not be worth the money, but if you have a G3 or G4, this is a great little item.

Fantastic! 25 July 2008
I bought the Elgato Turbo 264 a couple of months ago and have not regretted it for one moment. A movie which used to take me up to 4 hours to encode into iPod mp4 format using Handbrake will now encode in a blistering 40 minutes or less with perfect results every time.

Even if you have a computer with a very fast processor the Turbo 264 is still worth buying as it acts as a separate processor freeing up your computer processor so that you can work on other things without loss of speed whilst encoding your movies.

This product is a joy to use and will save you alot of time and effort and enable you to get the most out of your video iPod, iPhone and apple tv.

As stated this may not be a good choice for a Mac Pro model, but it is worth while for a MacBook which will run faster and cooler with this taking the load off. Two people complained regarding the resolution ... the resolution of a regular DVD or TV signal is less than 800x600. There just isn't any more image to convert. Increasing the frame pixel size would just make the final movie more megabytes in size, not better.
