Product Description

Product Description

EyeTV Diversity is a powerful dual TV tuner stick (DVB-T or Freeview) for digital television live on your Mac or PC. It contains two integrated DVB-T (Freeview) TV tuners and two portable aerials. In Dual-Tuner mode, the two TV tuners operate independently so you can watch or record a TV programme on one channel while you record a different programme on another channel at the same time. Switch to Diversity mode to enjoy superior digital TV reception on your computer deep indoors and in conditions that are challenging for reception. In Diversity mode, the two TV tuners and aerials work together as one integrated unit to generate the best TV signal possible.

EyeTV Diversity comes with EyeTV 3, the award-winning TV software for Mac. Watch, pause, and rewind live TV – at your desk or from the comfort of your sofa. Search the Program Guide and record one show or an entire TV series. Edit your recordings, and share them with other Macs on your local network. EyeTV 3 can even export your TV shows to iTunes automatically for playback on your iPhone or iPad.

EyeTV Diversity is compatible with Windows 7 and works great with Windows Media Center. The included THC software for Windows supports many of the same features that are offered by the Mac TV software, EyeTV 3.

Basically, this product works - if you're in a good reception area (like, underneath the mast) and can use the silly little aerials that come with it. However, if you're several miles from the transmitter then you'll have to use a connection to a good quality, preferably boosted, domestic aerial.

Now we come to the point about it being too flimsy. I suppose that the two silly aerials are ok if you drive to the transmitter with your laptop but that's hardly what you're buying this for. To use the twin receiving function there's a normal co-ax-type connection which will take normal tv aerial cable and the second is a silly little miniature co-ax connector with a convertor. Now co-ax is heavy cable and this tiny connector is just not robust enough to hold a good connection. It wobbles about. The net result is that you pack in using it at all and revert to simply using the one connection, which means that the 'diversity' two-channels-at-one-time function is redundant.

The second problem is the remote. The receiver is a USB device not much bigger than a memory stick. Now USB ports are either at the back of the computer or at the side. If your USB connector is at the back (say, on a Mac Mini) then your screwed, the remote control can't make line-of-sight contact with the device. Likewise, if the USB port is on the wrong side of the computer, the remote receiver points away from the remote. And sticking out of the computer from a USB port, it's vulnerable to being accidentally whacked with something.

Altogether, this is just a gadget and not a solution for watching tv reliably on your Mac. Having said that, it does work as a tv receiver (usually only on one channel at a time) and the accompanying software is superb, easy to use and powerful when it comes to editing out adverts etc. The programming function makes it much easier to record than any set-top box I've ever had.

So if it only gets three stars do I hate it? Well no. It works but it's just not good enough for me to turn my Mac into a telly. It's too Micky mouse in construction. However, I'm well impressed with Elgato's software, the simple operating procedure and the picture quality so I've already ordered the Elgato satellite box.

All in all, it's a pity that Elgato don't make a more robust version of this similar in size to their satellite solution. I'd buy that instead.

This product is absolutely excellent. I use this with my iMac and my MacBookPro and it has always performed perfectly. Picture in picture or 2 different channels works as it should and both can have subtitles at the same time. I have used various usb DVB TV sticks with my Windows PC but always been plagued with crashes and annoyed at no subtitles (Windows media center does't support European subtitles only US closed caption)

It is expensive but definitely worth the money

Quite happy so far 14 Nov 2010
I would actually give it 4,5 stars. I really like but it's not perfect
The software is really stable and, most importantly, it has to antenna entries. At the beginning I thought that it was useless, but it allows the device to show TV and record it at the same time
Recording TV is really easy and straightforward.
Shame that the controller is infrared and not bluetooth or something similar. It's not very aesthetic to have to show the dongle in your living room
