Apart from Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, I was unfamiliar with his other works. I'd heard about the epic Cello Concerto and was familiar with the one Enigma variation (Nimrod) that crops up on telly adverts from time to time.
I wanted a budget disk to try out Elgar, yet of sufficient quality that I wouldn't feel pressured to upgrade if I liked it.
I've always loved the passion that a cello can portray. It is a large instrument and as such can deliver striking dynamics, though not too large as to sound woolly. The sound quality on this disk is very good (why else would the Penguin Guide recommend it?). Not only that but the orchestra is well balanced and has a nice overall tone. No harsh stings that sound dry and brittle. It's such an easy disc to sit back and enjoy.
If, like me, you are unfamiliar with Elgar and don't like to experiment with relatively modern classical music, rest assured that this is quality music. I found the second movement (Larghetto) of the Serenade for String Orchestra most relaxing and involving.
There maybe better 'audiophile' discs of individual performances, but you'll need to find them and pay for them. Take the stress out of that search, save a bit of money and relax with great quality at an affordable price. There is nothing cheap in the production of this disc.
Excellent value.
