I have had the performance of the Violin Concerto featured here on Vinyl for a good number of years. It is a much played favourite. So when I saw this CD I snapped it up. It comes with a brace of other fine performances. In my opinion the Violin Concerto still stands out among them, but every one makes for an enjoyable listen. I am giving the set Four Stars overall.

The Enigma Variations are given a lovely performance by Eugene Ormandy with the Philadelphia Orchestra. This is a light, youthful treatment, sounding like ballet music in its more energetic moments. The sound is crystal clear; you would not know this was a 1961 performance unless you looked at the details on the inlay. Five Stars. Their version of the Cockaigne Overture has the same energy but is not so sensitive, coming across as rather brassy in its louder movements, this time the age of the recording is more audible, with some tinniness in the louder sections (it is 1963 vintage), but still an enjoyable performance. Three Stars.

The live version of the Cello Concerto features the classic combination of Jacquine Du Pre playing the cello with husband Daniel Barenboim conducting the Philadelphia orchestra. She gives a more impassioned performance that in the `classic' EMI recording, and the cello is placed well to the fore here so that real edge of the seat excitement is conveyed. The occasional cough and noise off does not detract too much from the music. Three Stars.

Andrew Davis leads the Philharmonia Orchestra in rollicking performances of the Pomp And Circumstances marches. This is great fun, real Last Night Of The Proms stuff. Four Stars.

And now to the recording I bought this set for.

This is one of the rare and excellent recording which has not been equal for a long time. Here the orchestra is the servant to the cello yet they are working in harmony so as to produce the deep emotion of the human soul. The technique of the cellist is almost flawlest at times.
