Solti delivers a full-blooded Elgar program 3 Sept. 2011
By R. Nadel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Solti had a well-earned reputation for being fierce and for driving hard, at times. But his Elgar performances show him to be completely in tune with that romantic composer.

In the main feature, the Enigma Variations, Solti proves that he can surge and swell in sync with this music, in all it's variety. The Chicago Symphony, which we normally think of as bright and knife-edge sharp in Mahler, Strauss, and Bartok, sound warm and full in response to Solti and Elgar. The remastered sound is amazing (I have this recording on LP and it already sounded very good)! Solti and the Decca engineers balance the sections of the orchestra wonderfully so we hear details as well as a full presence in a very realistic sound-stage. Solti's interpretation is very responsive to the variations' contrasting moments, and the Nimrod variation in particular is quite moving - Solti really makes it the climax of the piece that it should be. This stands alongside such notable Elgarians as Boult and Barbirolli; and with better sound.

The Pomp & Circumstance performances have blue-blooded swagger and dash, but not bombast. Solti just gives himself over to the mood and lets Boult's own orchestra, the London Philharmonic, have its head, so to speak, resulting in performances that are emotionally stirring, technically marvelous, and completely in the spirit of this music which has often been slighted as mere album filler in other hands.

The Cockaigne Overture is another work that can treated as side-B material, and admittedly it is not Elgar's best music, but here Solti gives it deft and powerful handling, strident and romantic in turns.

This is really a very enjoyable and impressive Elgar program.

Solti's Americanized Enigmas, romping without worry of upsetting the gentry--nice for a change 17 April 2013
By Andrew R. Barnard - Published on Amazon.com

The previous reviewer makes an intelligent case for this recording, which finds Georg Solti in a vigorous mood, his general approach of sorts. It's true that the Chicago Symphony plays dazzlingly, with their egotistical brass and all, and the sound is very good. We're in for American Elgar without British refinement, which isn't all bad.

So coming to the Enigmas, Solti is all bright spirits. My quibble, which isn't serious, is that Solti sometimes drives fiercely, passing by the lovely British landscapes in his sports car. I enjoy the ride, but I'm not completely convinced by the lack of sophistication. The effect is certainly thrilling, with the faster variations like the 4th, 7th, and 11th coming off the best. There's no attempt to dig below the surface and nostalgia is downplayed in favor of surges of hurried passion. You'll be moved by Nimrod only if you don't mind that we're pushed too much to feel grief. In the end, I find Solti's approach welcoming, especially after so many conductors limply run through, but I still find it brash.

Solti moves to the London Phil for the Pomp and Circumstance Marches and Cockaigne Ove, but his overall temperament remains the same. Vulgarity isn't deplorable when presented by a marching band, so it's hard to pick Solti apart for not being refined. I can feel that Solti is just putting one foot in front of the other to the tune of glorious brass, but when I think this music is ear candy to begin with, why complain when Solti feels the same way?

I found myself drawn to everything on this disc, Solti's aggressiveness aside. I'm withholding one star because of my concerns, but I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of this disc and am sure to return.
Vim, vigor and terrific sound by Solti 4 July 2013

I was well acquainted with the "graduation" march, but the other marches were new to me. Likewise, the Enigma Variations were new to me. All are well documented sound and I value them in my collection. Hooray for Solti!
