These performances are superb - especially Falstaff.

Intepretatively Handley works 'inside the box', in that this is a traditional Falstaff with measured tempi and few extreme contrasts. There will be few shocks and surprises here, but it is done with superb taste and deftness - and we are not spared the emotional roller-coaster of the last 10 minutes or so, surely some of the most touching music Elgar ever wrote.

Had Otto Klemperer conducted Falstaff I imagine it might have been a bit like this. Ultimately Handley lets this glorious and mercurial music speak for itself, rather than trying to gild it or over-egg it. Sometimes less is more - his art is truly "that which conceals art" and his care and sympathy shines through.

The orchestral playing is quite superb and I can believe stories that these were happy sessions. The microphones are close and the recording as a whole has plenty of treble, but that's no problem at all as it all coheres superbly. You can still hear that the orchestra has been captured in a "real" room acoustic, with natural reverberation when required and space and mystery around the quieter music. All the various parts of the LPO are captured gloriously - the violins (firsts and seconds divided left and right in Boultian fashion), the winds (clarinets!) and the wonderful blaze of the horns - and blended into a convincing whole, and there is plenty of space for everyone to shine.

Cockaigne, too, is very fine indeed - the spirit of Wagner's Meistersingers overture can be heard, somehow. If I'm honest I don't feel the Introduction and Allegro quite achieves lift-off - there are hotter accounts around, greatest of all that of Barbirolli. But please buy this CD for Falstaff.

This is a well recorded disc containing recordings made in 1978 and 1983. All the recordings are of good quality, are wide ranging, faithful in tonal response and well balanced. The performances are uniformly well played by the orchestra under the experienced guidance of Vernon Handley.

Falstaff is vividly characterised and makes for instructive and entertaining music making. Cockaigne has the whiff of London about it and the Introduction and Allegro is less urbane as one would hope.

All in all this is a very satisfying combination of works which make for a good concert program The interpretations are idiomatic and very traditional in their effect, Handley's interpretations being very much part of what id meant by 'traditional.'

I would therefore suggest that there is a strong case for considering this disc a front runner for purchase if the content is agreeable. All the musical considerations are easily met.
