Product Description

Product Description

William Reed, former Leader of the London Symphony Orchestra and one of Elgar's closest friends from 1910 until his death, was first encouraged to write this biography by George Bernard Shaw. The result is an informal and spontaneous portrait of the classical composer's personality and working methods, through his years of composing the Second Symphony, "Falstaff" and the vioin and cello concertos. Reed provides his own interpretations of Elgar's music and a section which contains 42 full-page reproductions of all the coherent sketches for the Third Symphony, including a careful analysis of the projected work, movement by movement.

Written by Elgar's great friend and encourager, W H "Billy" Reed, this book is valuable reading for anyone who loves the music of the great composer. It is particularly worth reading alongside the Northrop-Moore biography "A creative life", as the two books complement each other.

The book is written with warmth, respect and affection and has not become at all dated. It gives fascinating background information about Elgar and how some of his music evolved. For me it added greatly to my enjoyment of Elgar's music as well as to my understanding of his character.

An enjoyable memoir 1 Jun 2004

Amazing!

The book tells how Edward Elgar (one of the first successful modern English composers), went from a mediocre life to a brilliant life of absolutely wondrous music.

Being an urban music fan, even I was overwhelmed by this man's music.

After the First World War, he was broken emotionally until he died in 1934. The book explains how his sad, rich life twisted and turned. He was a "sad celebrity" (as I call him).

Elgar, as I think I know him, is an amazing composer (especially for strings) with an interesting, but now increasingly forgotten life.

This is an extremely well written, sad, book about the man who I believe was the greatest English composer of all time.

Recommended for anyone who knows Edward Elgar's works.
