Amazing!
The book tells how Edward Elgar (one of the first successful modern English composers), went from a mediocre life to a brilliant life of absolutely wondrous music.
Being an urban music fan, even I was overwhelmed by this man's music.
After the First World War, he was broken emotionally until he died in 1934. The book explains how his sad, rich life twisted and turned. He was a "sad celebrity" (as I call him).
Elgar, as I think I know him, is an amazing composer (especially for strings) with an interesting, but now increasingly forgotten life.
This is an extremely well written, sad, book about the man who I believe was the greatest English composer of all time.
Recommended for anyone who knows Edward Elgar's works.
