On impulse I bought this recording and listened to it today. I have been a fan of Elgar's choral music for many years, but have not heard "The Dream of Gerontius" for a long time. I gave up transferring my old LPs to digital as a waste of time and threw them in the dumpster. I liked the sound of this recording which made me feel like I was in the concert hall. Sometimes recordings are rich in sound to the point that I wonder if someone was playing with the levels, giving it an artificial feeling.

I liked the performance of both works. Normally I would not think of Ashkenazy for choral music, but this performance was as good as any of the others I use to have on vinyl. This is also a newer recording from 2008.

I love the music of Elgar and I managed to find four Japanese Exton SACDs of Ashkenazy conducting Elgar with the the Sydney Symphony. They were great - superb sound and assertive, attractive performances. The Decca CD recording of the Cello Concerto and the Dream of Gerontius caught my eye and I ordered it as soon as it was released. It is not SACD quality but it is nevertheless very good, with rich and fully detailed sound. The performances are full of life but entirely in the sound world of Elgar - Gerontius is as near to transcendental music as it is possible to get.
