"Ed and Fred" both made significant contributions to the British chamber repertoire, and these two discs, part of EMI's British Composers series, offer a great introduction to their work. The major work on the Elgar disc is the piano quintet. It was written just before Elgar embarked on the celebrated cello concerto, which comes as no surprise when you listen to the elegiac opening of the Adagio. This is mellow Elgar, heart-warming music by a master at the peak of his creativity. The Sospiri ("Sighs") is better known in the version for string orchestra, harp and organ, but works well for violin and piano. The rarity of the disc is The Farm Yard, which Elgar wrote for a wind quintet in which Elgar played the bassoon. It is an irrepressibly chirpy work, crisply played here, and great fun. The Delius CD, with violin sonatas nos 1-3 and the cello sonata, offers a rich outpouring of aspirational, mellifluous music from this most warmly romantic of composers. The soaring lines of his better-known orchestral music are here in plenty, in four hugely rewarding works given performances which really get to the heart of this lovely music. --Keith Clarke

Years ago I began buying titles in the EMI's British Composers Series in order to get classic performances by the great conductors Sir Adrian Boult and Sir John Barbirolli, but along the way I discovered that I really enjoy the music of Elgar and Delius. With that in mind, this 2CD set featuring Chamber Works by Elgar and Delius seemed a natural choice. While most titles in the British Composers series feature historical mono and vintage stereo performances, many of them are recent digital recordings, as is the case here. All of the pieces are played to perfection by these various soloists of the London Symphony Orchestra. I highly recommend this disc for fans of British music.
