Biography

Born in Oxford on 26 January 1945, Jacqueline du Pré was the second child of Derek and pianist Iris du Pré. At four Jacqueline heard the sound of the cello on the radio and asked her mother for "one of those." She started with lessons from her mother before beginning study at the London Violoncello School at five. Before long she was winning local music competitions alongside her sister, flautist… Read more in Amazon's Jacqueline du Pré Store

Marred Masterpiece 22 Mar 2009
Format:Audio CD
Du Pre's Elgar is rightly considered one of the all-time great accounts. The Adagio in particular is simply gorgeous: full of yearning and barely-controlled emotional intensity. Be warned, though, that this version has the excitement and the irritation of a recorded live performance. There is quite a bit of decidedly audible coughing, very obtrusive in the quieter section, that might mar your enjoyment.

Deeply Moving Live 11 Mar 2008
By Scriabinmahler TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Of all Elgar recordings by Du Pre, this live recording is no doubt the most deeply moving one. The slow movement is probably the slowest interpretation, yet it never loses tension as she gives everything to express the heart-breakingly poignant Elgarian longing. Despite the almost fierce outpouring of emotion, this performance never gives an impression of vulgar sentimentalism, as the sheer depth of music making transcends everything else!

Barenboim's account of Enigma is equally great recording. No over-emotionality here, yet full of grace, magical moments and noble beauty presented in Wagnerian grandeur. The famous Nimrod is played most beautifully.

An event 29 May 2011
By enthusiast TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I'm sorry. As an event this account of the Cello Concerto was exquisitely moving. But as a performance it is totally over the top. What moves me is a feeling of ... well, almost of embarassment. This is an early manifestation of celebrity culture: du Pre was a great musician, her illness was tragic, the emotion of a period when her illness was briefly in remission must have been intense for her and for her husband. I don't think they exploited it - like today's celebs do - but our reaction, like this performance, is just too sentimental for me. Her great performance of the Elgar was with Barbirolli. Record companies and Amazon reviewers should not mislead potential buyers that it is this one.

The Enigma Variations performance is OK (3 or 4 stars) - a good but not unmissable performance. The two stars are for the Cello Concerto.
