This bargain box is a compilation of Sir Andrew Davis' Teldec recordings from 1991-1998 and is highly recommended although not "perfect".

CD 1 has Symphony 1 and the Pomp & Circumstance Marches (not my favourite Elgar!). The symphony is warm and misty and Brahmsian; I'm not sure that this autumnal approach quite works, but the BBC Symphony Orchestra plays well. The recording could be a bit brighter, too.

CD 2 has In The South and Symphony 2. The symphony performance here is 5 star stuff; warm, sweet-toned, and thoughtful. A genial performance, serious in tone. In The South is equally well-done.

CD3 has the Cockaigne Overture, Introdution & Allegro for Strings, and the ubiquitous Enigma Variations. These are all very good indeed, with the Enigma Variations full, dark, and assertive. The BBC Symphony Orchestra excel.

CD4 has Falstaff, Romance for Bassoon & Orchestra, and other orchestral works. Falstaff is very well done indeed, as are the others.

CD5 has The Music Makers, Dream Children, Elegy for Strings, and others. The BBC Chorus take centre-stage with The Music Makers, and this is a good version to have along with the "classic" Boult recording on EMI.

All-in all, a 4½ star set, docked ½ a star due to the less than great Symphony 1 and for the occasional vieled nature of some of the recorded sound (although this pretty much vanishes at higher volume levels).

Highly recommended, and a good starting point on your looking into Elgar.

Magnificent performances, clear stereo sound quality, we are enjoying these thoroughly. Thought it might sound dated, but it absolutely does not.

Andrew Davis provides a god interpretation of Elgar's music. The price of the CDs is very competitive and good value

Nice overview of Elgar's music, beautifully played by the BBC Orchestra...a nice 5 disc set at a good price.

By Gerald Neily - Published on Amazon.com
At $47 to download the whole set or $0.69 per track, this set should obviously be cherry-picked rather than downloaded whole. So forget the "Fallstaff" and "Enigma Variations". At 69 cents each, I DLd "Froissart" and "Music Makers" which I had never heard before, and they were well worth it.
