Product Description

Product Description

Ravi and Anjali are fascinated by their grandfather's stories of India, where the sun is like a ferocious tiger, the wind is like a wild horse, and monsoon rains cascade from the sky like waterfalls. Ravi particularly loves to hear about the festival of Divaali, where parading elephants take pride of place in their grandfather's memories, and he dreams of having an elephant dance to the tune he composes on his flute. In addition to an evocative, beautifully written story, Elephant Dance also contains endnotes on the cultural heritage of India, making it a perfect introduction to Indian life and traditions.

Format:Paperback
An exciting, beautifully illustrated book which introduces children to a country and culture beyond their own. A delight to read aloud to your child or an older child to read alone.

This was bought for my 6 yr old to support her work at school.
Colourful with such vibrant and interesting pictures, this book tells the tale of two children (Ravi and Anjali) asking their Grandfather about life back in india. With each of his memories and answers to their questions, spanning a double page spread with a wonderful colourful scene, this is a joy to read and share. The beautiful illustrations inspired my daughter to draw her own elephant pictures and our house is now full of her paintings based on this one book. The story itself is like an advert for so many tantalising and exciting aspects of india that will leave children wanting to know more and (if anything like my curious 6 yr old) will want to know more about the tigers, what a monsoon is and whether elephants really can dance..

As a parent, I appreciated the intelligent and thoughtful way this book had been put together. I particularly liked the way the story spanned across two countries as the grandfather was visiting his family from India and the children were keen to ask him endless questions about life in India. The way that the children and interested in what their grandfather can tell them and share his stories with them was something that worked so well as a way to interest young readers. The descriptive language and the gentle domestic setting contrasting with the grandfather's exciting memories, are great. P

For my daughter, she found it an interesting story with pretty pictures. For a teacher, I can see this book being a wonderful way to introduce a topic in a totally fresh way that children can easily connect and relate.
