The sad story of a vibrant London district damaged by Second World War bombing and then destroyed by the Megalomanic "Town Planners" of the post-war period. The bomb damage could have been repaired but 50 years later the "Planning" wreckage remains.
Well researched and elegantly written.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Mr. Rupert J. B. Smith on 19 Feb. 2014
I've lived in the Elephant for 25 years, I always knew it used to be a busy commercial and cultural centre but I had no idea just how rich and exciting its history was. Stephen Humphrey has done a meticulous job of recording the huge department stores, churches, restaurants, music halls etc that made E&C a real destination. It's also a timely reminder of just how disastrous 'town planning' can be - the 50s/60s redevelopment of the area basically destroyed everything. It's wonderful to walk around the area and think about what used to be: the view from my window will never be the same.
