Product Description

Since it was first published in 1964, Elements of Shipping has become established as a market leader. Now this new edition has been entirely updated and revised to take in the many changes that have occurred in the shipping industry in recent years and the increased emphasis placed on professionalism, qualified personnel and the need for the latest available technology.

With new chapters on seaports and electronic data interchange, it explains in a lucid, professional manner the basic elements of shipping embracing operating, e-commerce/computerization (shipboard/trade), commercial, legal, economic, technical, managerial, logistics and financial considerations. It also reflects recent major trends including the impact of globalization, current good practice and future trends. All twenty-two chapters have been updated and over half of the content is new.

Filling a gap for the discerning reader who wishes to have a complete understanding of all the elements of the global shipping scene together with the interface with seaports, international trade and logistics, it remains essential reading for shipping executives along with students and academics with an interest in the shipping industry.

Excellent overview of the shipping Industry from vessel descriptions, manning of vessels, Liner conferences, Charter Parties, Bills of Lading and much, much more. Elements of Shipping is a superb introductory source for anyone new to shipping or due to take shipping exams in the near future. No matter what area of shipping a student is studying, they will find relevant pages in this book. Elements of Shipping would, furthermore, not be out of place on the shelf of anyone with long term experience of the Maritime trade.

discusses many topics 19 Jan 2008
By W Boudville - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
For the casual reader, Branch describes an entire world of commercial interactions that is typically little appreciated. Most of the world's commerce in physical goods takes place by boat. An entire global infrastructure has arisen to handle this traffic. The many aspects of which are treated in this book.

One is the different types of ships. There is the gas tanker, for liquified natural gas. The fruit carrier. Ore ships, for oil, bulk grain, fertilizer and ore. And of course container vessels.

Then there are the various maritime authorities. For the Suez Canal, the Panama Canal, and others.

Nor does the book ignore the shipping exchanges. Where people can bid for ships to transport their goods. The Baltic Exchange figures prominently in this section, as perhaps the most important of these bourses.

The ideas behind the bill of lading get extensive discussion. A lot of thought has gone into the contracts made explicit by such bills. And there are numerous types, developed for specialised uses.

Great for the student or seasoned practitioner... 25 Sep 2010

Elements of Shipping is much more than an entry level guide to commercial shipping. This is an excellent desk reference for all aspects of the commercial shipping industry including ship captains, crew, ship agents, port operators, insurance companies, and researchers.

This text gives a business perspective and overview of the elements of global shipping trade. In addition, it reflects on historical trends with container, bulkers, tankers, and ferry vessels. It also includes information reflecting average shipping times, port operations, vessel construction, INCO terms, bills of lading, classification, insurance, finance, marketing, security, and port state control. The glossary lists common shipping terms and abbreviations.

Again, this is a great source for the maritime transportation manager.
