I bought this book with a collection of others in order that it could be used for GCSE Graphic Products pupils to create their own pop-up books. This book features each possible mechanism that can be used for making a pop-up card or book.

It starts off with the basics and moves onto more advanced methods of pop-up. Each example is made from white card stuck on a coloured base and has comments regarding the dimensions, angles needed etc. You can open out and see some of the more advanced items such as spinners, wheels, pulleys and string varients.

This book is great in that it is 3D and not just a 2D drawing, this means that you can gain a better insight into the workings and quickly find a solution to what you need to create your own pop ups.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real must-buy for pop-up engineering! 15 Nov 2008
By Miss K TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
If you want to learn how to do pop-ups, this book is the best place to start! I bought quite a few different books in the area that ranged from covering basic pop-up tecniques for greetings cards to technical books for more complicate projects. Really, I only needed this one book - 'The Elements of Pop-Up' is a fantastic book that actually has all the pop-up examples made up on the page so you're not just looking at pictures thinking 'where do I put the fold??!' - there are tips and instructions but you can figure things out just by looking at the ready-made examples.

As well as all kinds of pop up examples (basic & more complex), the book also includes a selection of wheel mechanisms and pull tabs which would be invaluable if you are making a pop-up storybook that requires the reader to 'pull the tab' to animate the pop-up. The tips are really useful here but you can also lift up the page flap and figure out how it's put together just by looking at what's going on underneath the page!

It doesn't matter whether you are just a hobbyist or a design student, a graphic designer or anything else, this is highly recommended to all who are interested in paper art/pop-ups/paper engineering! It's well laid out, easy to follow and just a fantastic buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars challenging but thorough! 20 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover
If you're ambitious but new to the technique of making pop-ups, this book is challenging but provides you with every angle and fold you will ever need to create beautiful books and cards.

The cover of the book would suggest that there are examples of when you could use certain folds etc but that is not the case, e.g. the 'creation' inside the cover could have been labelled.

Overall the layout is great and the explanations very clear, but if like me you struggle reproducing angles I would advise printing off the templates available from the web - it makes life a whole lot easier, and it's not cheating at all!!

This is a great book if you want to have an overview of the different basic pop-up techniques.
It's colorful/original and it distinguishes itself from other learning pop up books by actually showing the reader practical examples, that is, the book itself is a popup book.

However if you're looking forward to "construct" something you'll be disappointed.
The paper techniques are indeed there but a consistent explanation to its realization/execution is missing.
In fact as a reader you're able to see the different constructions from behind but there's for example no drawings/planification of the different pieces and it's almost impossible not to destroy a construction if you actually want to see its structure and how it was built.
Furthermore there are no examples of cards or books with the actual practice/implementation of these paper techniques.

To sum up, it's more like a dictionary/catalog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 9 July 2008
Format:Hardcover
This book is excellent if you are interested in paper engineering and pop ups. It begins with an impressive pop up at the start of the book, which was made by the different pop up examples throughout the book.

The book consists of 32 different examples of pop ups and 11 wheels and pull tabs, each one shows the finished design with an explanation of how to make it and how it works. You can also see how the popups work by taken them apart and recreating them.

I have to admit some of these are extremely difficult (not for children) , but well worth it, when they are completed. The more simpler popups are shown by the 'easy' symbol beside them.

This book is well worth the money! Plenty of examples and fun to create.
Thanks for reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book about pop up mechanisms 17 July 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Very nice and informative book about pop-ups. Although it is a bit expensive (even used books) I think it is a must-have book for all pop-up enthusiasts. Basically it is an encyclopedia about pop-up mechanisms. You can even unfold the page and see the "entrails" of each mechanism and learn how it all works and is put together.
