Book Description

20 Dec 2012
Getting to grips with physical chemistry can be a daunting task. With new concepts to understand and a large amount of mathematics to master, it is no wonder that students can sometimes find it overwhelming.

Elements of Physical Chemistry has been carefully developed to help readers increase their confidence when using physics and mathematics to answer fundamental questions about the structure of molecules, how chemical reactions take place, and why materials behave the way they do.

The content is tightly focussed and well-matched to undergraduate courses, making it easy to find the information needed. Topics are covered in a clear, easy-to-follow style, using everyday examples to help students to visualise concepts and procedures that can otherwise seem very abstract.

This edition sees further development of the learning features. These include Chemist's toolkits, which provide a reminder of mathematical techniques and introductory chemistry and physics needed to follow material in the chapters; worked examples providing step-by-step routes through problems; brief illustrations explaining how to use equations to calculate numerical values; and self-tests that allow students to check their understanding.

On the accompanying Online Resource Centre, students have access to multiple choice questions and Webcasts, short videos showing, step-by-step, how to solve an exercise. For lecturers, there is a test bank and the figures from the text are available to download.

Product Description

Review

This text presents fundamental concepts of physical chemistry in an engaging and enjoyable style. I will definitely be recommending it to others. (Matthew Ryder, Chemistry student, Heriot-Watt University)

I think the book is very good for first and second years. It does a good job of explaining some of the traditionally more 'scary' topics without being too heavy on the maths. The exercises and questions are also done well, and the graphs and diagrams are useful and clear. (Jonathan Booth, Chemistry student, University of York)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great starting material. 10 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm in my first year of my Chemistry degree and this is a great book for getting to grips with the subject. It's detailed yet concise and straight to the point. I find it goes very well hand in hand with our core book Atkins Physical Chemistry 9th Ed. Personally I read the material in this book for an overview and solid foundation then move onto the more detailed textbook.
Would recommend.

Had to take physical chem for school. Got the book here for cheaper so that's a plus. This class kicked my ass. Tried to use the book as much as I could to save myself. It wasn't much help. Had to drop the course. Will be reselling the book soon. One of those required courses I don't even need for my career (like Organic Chem). College is over rated. Get into debt with little chance of a pay off. Good luck if you have to take this course. Hope the book will help you more than it did me.
