1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, 1 Mar 2009
By
Teach (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Elements of Lore: v. 1 (Paperback)
Having read all the very positive reviews on this site (and there are a lot of them), I eagerly bought a copy of the book. It has however proved to be a great disappointment.
It reminds me very much of the scribblings of a very precocious 12 year old who has been given a brand new thesaurus for Christmas. A previous reviewer described it as having the feeling of a first draft, and indeed, that is a very apt, if generous, description of the work.
Leaving aside the spelling and grammatical errors, which are down to poor editing by the publishers, the plot is undeveloped, full of holes and at times a bit unbelievable. The characters are two dimensional and have counterparts in other better written stories. I couldn't help but notice that the author is now in the educational field which might explain the bizarre word choices and phrases used. (It seemed at times to be an exercise in how many different ways to say said.)
The only good thing that could be said about this book is that it supports a very worthy cause, which might go some way to explain why there are so many five starred reviews, when the book is obviously a poor read and poorly executed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just an opinion!, 25 Nov 2008
This review is from: The Elements of Lore: v. 1 (Paperback)
After reading all reviews on this book, I decided to go for it and see if it did indeed compare to Harry Potter. I'm afraid to say in my opinion it didnt come close ... not nearly!! Thats not to say I didnt enjoy the story, I did and will read the next installment when it makes its appearance. I do have to say that one thing did get to me throughout the book and hindered my enjoyment of it and that was the considerable number of typos throughout. Truly awful, I do hope the next book sorts this out, I felt the need to dig out the highlighter pen and send a proof read copy to the publisher!! On a more positive note, the story was good, fast paced (no boring dull moments to allow the brain fog to take over) and original I liked it!

1.0 out of 5 stars very poor, 26 Aug 2009
This review is from: The Elements of Lore: v. 1 (Paperback)

I bought this book after finding it on a listmania list along with harry Potter and Artemis Fowl...
I was very dissapointed by this book.
With all the promises that it was better than Harry Potter... I tried very hard and couldn't even finish it. The characters are very superficial and I disliked the main characters (very hard to read a book, when you don't sympathise with the characters).
The mistakes in the text are annoying. It felt to me that I was reading a non-corrected pre-version of someone who has an idea for a book. The idea was perhaps not bad but the way it's brought kills it.

I'm glad the money goes to a good cause
