4.0 out of 5 stars This is where the journey begins, 27 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Elements: the Best of Mike Oldfield (Audio CD)
I remember hearing a song on the radio at about 8 years old that haunted me in to adulthood. The song was "Moonlight Shadow" and it remains one of my favourite ever songs to date. It would be sad to write Oldfield off as only being famed for Tubular Bells and co as there are some truly wonderful and charismatic songs on this album. "Five Miles Out" shows how its all done and "Heavens Open" is a must for playing whilst driving the long open road. This album is brilliantly quirky but so easily listened to I don't why I am the first to review it!

Elements is probably one of the best places (along with Tubular Bells, of course) to start with Mike Oldfield. This has a great selection of his music over the years up to his Tubular Bells 2 album. You get a fair range of his instrumental stuff, as well as his other songs such as the excellent 'Family Man' which has one of the best Oldfield solos ever, in my opinion. He has always been an original, enigmatic character and this collection goes some way to introducing you to the music of this unique songwriter and musician. Well worth a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best easy-listening CD i have ever heard!, 8 Feb 2001
This review is from: Elements: the Best of Mike Oldfield (Audio CD)
I first bought this ablum for my aunt birthday when i was about 15. I thought i would play it and see what all the fuss was about - and i liked it so much she never actually received it. I bought her something else instead!! Now i am 21 and looking to buy the CD. I think my favorite song on the album is Family Man. It is catchy, the words mean something, and it makes very good background music as I drive. Do not asume Mike Oldfield is just a classical writer, he is amazing and you will probebly recognise some of the songs.
