Book Description

7 Dec 1995 0226467643 978-0226467641 2nd Revised edition
This revised and expanded edition of the classic "Elements of Acoustic Phonetics" provides a concise introduction to basic concepts of acoustics and digital speech processing that are important to linguists, phoneticians, and speech scientists.

The second edition includes four new chapters that cover new experimental techniques in acoustic phonetics made possible by the use of computers. Assuming no background in physics or mathematics, Ladefoged explains concepts that must be understood in using modern laboratory techniques for acoustic analysis, including resonances of the vocal tract and the relation of formants to different cavities; digital speech processing and computer storage of sound waves; and Fourier analysis and Linear Predictive Coding, the equations used most frequently in the analysis of speech sounds. Incorporating recent developments in our knowledge of the nature of speech, Ladefoged also updates the original edition's discussion of the basic properties of sound waves; variations in loudness, pitch, and quality of speech sounds; wave analysis; and the hearing and production of speech.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very satisfying 16 Jan 2006

It was a joy to see very complicated concepts (e.g. LMS for LPC analysis) explained so simply and naturally. Close to no math prerequisites for this one, if that's your concern. If you do get lost, the author's crystal clear prose and explainations are going to come back and pick you up, and even if you miss a technicality, it doesn't matter because you will understand the big picture and the practical applications. (Which incidentally is exactly the opposite of what happened during my studies at University.)
This was my first book in this field and I found it very insightful. I'm coming from a theoretical background in DSP, and yet I wasn't bored at all by the step-by-step mathematical derivations.

Major improvements are using the source-filter in place of spring resonance model and fine tutorials on digital speech processing. An excellent first text for the student phonetician. For more advanced students use my 1999 text. J.M. Pickett.

This book was purchased with the intention of understanding word spectrograms. This is not the book for that function.
It is very technical and would be excellent for sound technicians. or people that prefer very technical and academic writing.
