Having only ever studied Korean by myself at home with no structure or teaching guidance for too long, I finally decided to invest in this book. For me, it is serving as a revision tool for grammar I already know, but also an introduction to new grammar and helpful vocabulary. What I love most is the plentiful exercises at the end of each chapter that continue to introduce the new grammar and vocab you learned in that chapter and to integrate the grammar and vocab from previous chapters so that you won't forget those. You can check your answers in the back of the book and simply revisit any grammar points you don't understand yet (the layout is very clear).
Someone here mentioned useless vocabulary and vocabulary specifically for a classroom setting... I know for a fact this book is used for the first half of the first year of BA Korean at SOAS and was co-written by one of the lecturers there. This 'classroom' vocab is no doubt to introduce it to the students so that the teacher can use it. But for those of us outside of a classroom, there is no problem because these phrases are left behind in the book just as quickly as they were introduced; they do not continue to be used throughout. Having said that, some are useful in a more general sense anyway. The rest of the vocab is extremely useful; you might not use every word everyday but certainly while I was studying from this book during a trip to Korea this summer, I found myself being able to utilise a lot of the vocabulary there, which proves that it is not useless lists of vocab. The amount of new words introduced in each chapter may seem daunting sometimes but if you're studying by yourself then you have the freedom of setting your own pace.

This is an excellent book for those who are wishing to study the Korean language.
It is clearly set out, never letting you feel as if you have been pushed in at the deep end as so many language books do.
Compared with several other guides to Korean which concentrate purely on the spoken word and rely heavily on phonetic transcription, Elementary Korean introduces the the Korean writing system (Hangul) from the start. [Be warned however - there are in excess of 1500 characters of Chinese origin (Hanji) that are regularly used in written Korean that this book does not cover so you will need to invest in other material if you intend to pursue the study of Korean beyond the elementary level.]
There is a useful CD that accompanies the book included in the back cover which is of the same high standard as the rest of the book.
If you are considering the study of Korean for any purpose be it educational/business/pleasure then I would hghly reccomend the purchase of this useful book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Better books out there... 12 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This book is for people wanting to study Korean at an intermediate level. The book starts off with phrases that are transcribed into the international phonetic alphabet (IPA), which having no prior knowledge to this can be difficult (you need to learn the Korean alphabet not the IPA!) Also the exercises and answers in the back of the book do not match. This seems to be an error in the editing, but it is still not acceptable for a 25 pound book. This is not a problem if you have someone to show you, however if you are studying alone it can become very confusing.
The book is quite expensive, other books such as Colloquial Korean (Routledge) are a much better way to start studying Korean language.
