Best known for the 1960 mega-hit Muleskinner Blues by the Fendermen, as well as the R&B hit Spring by Birdlegs & Pauline, Cuca was a very big deal locally. Owner Jim Kirchstein ran his own studio and even pressed his own records. Between 1959 and 1969, he put out hundreds of records on Cuca, Sara and various subsidiaries - mostly rock with a bunch of polka discs thrown for local old-timey folk!
This is the first release in Aces forthcoming exploration of Cucas rockin back catalogue - one of Americas best kept secrets and is one of the finest cruisin instrumental CDs in a long time.
90% of the material is new to CD. Even the original 45s rarely turn up.
The CD features eye-catching cover art that will leap out at the viewer.
Compiled and annotated by Rob Finnis, "Elemental Instrumentals" appeals to a wide demographic; ranging from fans of early instrumental rock to 60s garage rockers.

Instro-MENTAL AS ANYTHING,
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elemental Instrumentals (Audio CD)
The first of Ace's Wisconsin series of regional rock'n'roll from its main label Cuca a label which serviced the State with polka records before turning to more rockin' sounds. What's here is total musical failure and shambolic sounds but then it was not regarded at the time as being no more than records to sell at gigs by teen bands and if there was any hope of clutching the brass ring as a result it was down to sheer luck.Their instrumnetals were copies of Johnny & the Hurricanes, the Ventures or Duane Eddy which is what makes them very desirable today but its likely in most cases the groups actually played their own instruments as the corporates would have probably shown them the door.
Think about it.Corporates only issued instrumentals when they were under license and the obvious example is Dot who licesned Wipeout from what had been 2 different Indie labels then signing them and bringing in a professional group The Challengers to add the rest of the 12 tracks to the album but issued it as the Surfaris! When MCA took them over the momentum had been lost and the Surfaris turned to vocals Mainly amatuer groups with day jobs the ones that lasted into some kind of musical career could be counted on one hand. Its also a wonder how any info has been found for any of these groups who have names like the Tornadoes (who are not the Hollywood ones and would soon either have to change their name after the British ones if they intended sticking around) The same could be said of the Tikis a name used by another West Coast band who would soon become Harpers Bizarre If anyone at the time had suggested this stuff would one day be taken seriously and that people would pay daft money for it you would be regarded as being out of your tree.

southern wisconsin is beautiful country. lots of scenic hills and pasture land. i recommend you drive through it if you haven't. mostly folks of german and scandinavian descent out there. cheese. beer. that's what you expect, and that's what you can look forward to. not exactly a hotbed for recording studios back in the late 50's/early 60's. but it seems that a fella named jim kirchstein set up shop somewhere around madison back in the day, and that many a young man with dreams of stardom stuck in his head made way to kirchstein's studio. what you have here is the 1st of 3 volumes that document those recordings. "elemental," is an all instrumental bash of guitars and saxophones that show, while wisconsin is a bit off from the ocean, the youngsters there were definitely aware of the wonders of what was then known as "surf music." this is a very fun collection of groups that aspired to making hits like the chantays "pipeline," or the surfaris "wipe out." and check out track one here: "scalping party." no political correctness back in '62. listen and you will know what i mean. 28 tracks in all, covering the years 1959-1965. many excellent guitar performances, too. highly recommended for enthusiasts of that era, or to folks with a love for music off the beaten path. thanks for hearing me out.

BEWARE,

Musicians play in tune and understand beats typical of Duane Eddy and Ventures, well recorded mono sound for the time. Lotsa trax. BUT: Lacks concept of "melody". Rhythm is present, but that is all there is for which a few yells cannot compensate: real surf songs in contrast have sense of identity (verse-chorus). Sounds like backing tracks (karaoke?) for demos yet to be written and dubbed in. These cows came in from pasture, were milked, but where are the cowherds on lead guitar or vocal?
