3.0 out of 5 stars Pilates with Lara Croft 1 April 2010
By International Cowgirl VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
If, like me, you last worked your abs about 1994, this `beginners' DVD may have you reaching for a restorative cup of tea before too long... The freckle-faced presenter (unnervingly reminiscent of a CGI-style heroine, with coat-hanger shoulders and impossibly long, stork-like limbs) does warn early on that Pilates works the so-called `Powerhouse' muscles - these being the holy trinity of abs, glutes (never quite grasped what they were) and inner thighs. And, boy, she's not kidding. Even the press-ups are directed in such a way that your abs are carrying most of the load.

Well, my abs are less Powerhouse than Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, and as such, on a first tentative viewing, I watched most of this from the safety of my sofa. It did seem to go on forever. The pumping Ibizan-style soundtrack didn't help either (there should be - although there isn't - an option to TURN IT OFF). I do appreciate that a beginners' DVD shouldn't be too simplistic (or else you won't get your money's worth), but the pace throughout is fairly brisk, and there isn't a whole lot of time to get to grips with `Pilates-style breathing' (or fathom how to `lengthen your corset') before you're off on a rapid-fire course of thigh-squeezing, butt-clenching action. I'm knackered just writing about it...

In short, I'm not totally sold on the whole Pilates philosophy (or indeed, after watching this, any the wiser about it) but there are some exercises here that I'll definitely use in the future. If you're on the fit side already (or taking a Pilates class) this DVD could be a useful tool in your home fitness programme. But for true beginners, this is a challenging routine best performed within collapsing range of your sofa...

5.0 out of 5 stars PILATES PERFECTION 21 July 2009
By Crafty Marie TOP 100 REVIEWER
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a perfect pilates DVD for beginners and also for people like me who want a good all-round pilates session they can do at home rather than at the gym.

It is a 50 minute workout and every single move is explained in detail - even how you should breathe properly. Nothing is done too quickly but at a nice, steady pace. But if you think this workout might be a walk in the park just because it says "for beginners" - think again! If you stick to the entire routine, you will feel your muscles burn at the end!

It starts with some easy standing poses and progresses to many leg lunges to tone those problem areas which women typically have and lastly onto mat work and abdominal crunches - ouch, but in a good way.

I can guarantee as someone who's been doing pilates for some time now, it will be difficult at first but you'll gradually find yourself doing harder moves and poses as you become more flexible.

If you're looking for a fast workout, pilates (and indeed yoga) are probably not for you but if you're looking to tone your body and become more flexible at a steady pace, this one is perfect. Excellent for beginners and those at an intermediate level.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners 5 Sep 2009
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
My wife has done a fair bit of pilates, and found this fairly full-on.
So definitely not for first-timers, but great if you are already fairly strong and want to tone up without having to leave the house!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for complete beginners
Although this is a well presented DVD it is not for a total beginner as some of the excercises are quite difficult and are more suitable for someone more experienced in Pilates. Read more
