Book Description

The first three books in the post-apocalyptic world of Elei's Chronicles.

*** Three books for the price of two!***

Rex Aftermath (Book 4, final in the series) is now also available: http://tinyurl.com/buth6k6

In a world composed of seven islands in the middle of the ocean, the all-women Gultur race rules. Parasites create new human races, decimate towns and cities, killing the repressed mortals.

Rex Rising (Book 1):
Elei, a young aircar driver, leads a peaceful life until a mysterious attack on his boss sends him fleeing with a bullet in his side. Pursued for a secret he does not possess and with the fleet at his heels, he has but one thought: to stay alive. His pursuers aren't inclined to sit down and talk, although that's not the end of Elei's troubles. The two powerful parasites inhabiting his body, at a balance until now, choose this moment to bring him down, leaving Elei with no choice but to trust in people he hardly knows.
It won't be long before he realizes he must find out this deadly secret – a secret that might change the fate of his world and everything he has ever known – or die trying.

Rex Cresting (Book 2):
Still recovering at a hospital on the north coast of Dakru, Elei is convinced that his part in bringing down the Gultur is over. Rex has infected the other race and their dictatorial system is starting to collapse. Not every Gultur, though, has been affected, and on top of that, inside Elei’s body, Rex has matured and goes through another transformation. Elei isn’t sure he can survive Rex’s new strength — but that may prove the last of his worries as the Gultur descend on him again.

Rex Equilibrium (Book 3):
With the help of his friends, Elei has managed to disorganize the regime run by the all-women race of the Gultur, and he's on a mission to bring peace to the Seven Islands.
Old secrets come to the surface, friendships are forged and betrayals discovered, and a girl, Alendra, has managed to take hold of Elei's feelings. With a map that leads underground and the hope of toppling the Gultur regime, Elei and his companions seek a weapon to tip the balance of power.
But unrest within the resistance means that this time they are on their own and, as if crossing a world torn by war while keeping Rex under control wasn't enough, Elei fears that before the end Alendra might break his heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and imaginative 23 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Chrystalla Thoma presents a vivid and detailed nightmarish vision of a poisoned future in which human destinies are decided by the parasites they carry. It's wonderfully inventive stuff in terms of setting, plot and language and it bowls along at a terrific pace. The tone is taut and sinewy, and the story is peopled with characters who are appealing, mysterious, sexy and ominous all at the same time. And then there's the intriguing science upon which it is based, as briefly discussed in a thought-provoking afterword - just enough to make the reader realise that Elei's world could be almost upon us... Highly recommended for anyone seeking an exciting and intelligent read in which the sci-fi element supports rather than swamps the adventure that unfolds. You'll want to read the next in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite authors. 22 Nov. 2013
By Matthew Posner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I am certainly a fan of Chrystalla Thoma's books. Here is what I wrote about the first in the series, the first in this box set:

In Rex Rising, Chrystalla Thoma posits a narrow society of seven islands in which parasites dominate the lives of two sharply divided social classes. One is the Gultur, a ruling class or gorgeous, merciless females controlled by the parasite Regina (Latin for Queen) and uninterested in relationships or sexuality. The Gultur have total control over the class of normal people, who are denied ready access to water, food, and key technologies, and must scramble to survive even in crowded urban areas.

Young protagonist Elei begins this novel bleeding and on the run, controlled by parasites that war with each other inside his body, chased by the Gultur and not sure why. An old woman who cared for him was shot dead after shooting him first. But why? The novel's goal is to unfold the answers to these questions.

The central concept of this book, the main source of science in the fiction, is that parasites both sicken people and give them special powers, all the while ruling their behavior. Along with this concept is a well-drawn depiction of a painfully dystopian society in which the ruling class withholds water, creating a despicably hardscrabble existence for the population. This is upsetting to read (in a good way). Will the rising of Rex (yes, the title makes sense) relieve the suffering? Sorry, no spoilers here.

Rex Rising has a very small cast of characters. Elei and a big-brother figure, Kalaes, get developed in the most detail, while their allies, Maera (Kalaes' girlfriend) and Hera (a powerful but elusive spy) could be explored more than they are. The villainous Gultur remain a monolithic Other, with no strongly drawn individual villain to represent them in the conflict. All the elements in the book are so burgeoning with narrative potential that the novel functions like the two-hour pilot of a TV series, giving you the basis for many adventures to come. Also like TV show structure, the book alternates between rest and action, but the action constantly interrupts the rest, allowing the cast strikingly little down time.

The fast pace of the book kept me reading. I finished it eager for more information and explanation, which the series continues to provide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another steller performance by Chrystalla Thoma 24 Nov. 2013
By Randall - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I was drawn to this story immediately after reading Dioscuri because the author has such a brilliant imagination and her descriptive style is mesmerizing. It can be easily said that Rex Rising continues the trend with its original premise, great world building, and a story that has broken away from the ages old formula-driven plot. And now there is more! When I finished Rex Rising I was satisfied with it as a standalone, but I still wanted more of this world and of the interesting characters...and Rex itself. So once again the author delivers...a whole set. Fantastic! This dark and beautiful world expands and the plot writhes and rolls with characters who grow, change, love, suffer, and fight on. I'm not going to throw out any tidbits since I hate it when others lay out an entire plotline in a review, but I will say the following:
When I reviewed the first book, Rex Rising, I stated that is was "Bradbury worthy if such a thing is possible." As a fellow fiction writer, I stand by my words. This is a story worth the read and an author who has a firm grasp on storytelling, as demonstrated many times in her growing library of work, her ever growing fan base, and the amount of anticipation I had for "Rex Aftermath!" She just keeps on delivering.

I also strongly recommend the spin-off stories "Hera" and "Mantis" as well. Just think of them as not just the gravy on top, but a whole different meal.

The Elie Chronicles is a terrific series. The only thing better than this trilogy is knowing there is a 4th book.
Chrystalla Thoma has a way of making you care about the characters and what happens to them.
This is an intelligent series that also shows a wide range of emotion, just like in real life.
I highly recommend this series of books.....You will not be disappointed!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Science Fiction, Dystopia, Sweet Romance doesn't Get Better Than This 11 Nov. 2013
By Arlie Ann - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
One of the most imaginative series I've ever read with unforgettable characters. Elei will work his way into your heart with snappy dialogue, and fasted paced action scenes within opening chapter of the first book that keeps on going. I couldn't put these novels down and am thrilled there's a fourth book as well as novellas that give conclusion and fascinating background into Ms Thoma's amazing world.
