5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 29 Nov 2005
I came across this by chance and how glad I am that I did. Elegies has a beautiful sound to it. Each songs has their own charm and they are structured in such a way that your emotions are constantly being messed around, in a good way. This is simply supurb and I say this is a must have. yeah go on.... buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to feel good about feeling bad, 10 Jan 2004
By I. Trafford (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Despite William Finn's reputation, I was wary of this song-cycle, fearing a rather morbid experience.
On the contrary, this cd reveals a song-writer of seemingly endless versatility and perception. Dealing with his own response to various forms of loss- from the death of his mother, to the demise of a series of pet dogs, to the disappearance of his favourite Korean food-sellers- these songs are by turns moving, funny, tear-jerking and uplifting. Every song is richly melodic and dare I say William Finn's lyrics are a match for Sondheim?
The performances by the 5 singers are consistently excellent.
Overall, this can be considered a masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finn at his best!, 8 April 2009
By Stephen James Haggarty "bearboymamie" (Glasgow UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is definately Finn at his best. The songs are witty, sad, intimate and reassuring. The voices are extremely good, perhaps with the exception of Betty Buckley whom I find has a slightly grating vibrato. However, this cannot detract from an excellent and well written song cycle.
