It's odd that this is the first review of this album. I can't understand why. It plugs into the influence and tradition of black music just as Amy Whitehouse and Joss Stone did, and although it clearly sounds like music of its time, it's held up a lot better than most music dating back to the early house/rave scene. Maybe M People fans have got better things to do with their lives than write reviews on Amazon.
All four of the original M People albums were good (in fact they are all very much in the same style - maybe it was as well they had the dignity to stop when they were at their peak), and this is the break through one. As the Product Description says, there's a mix of rhythmic dance tracks with some slower soulful ones. This doesn't sound very remarkable - until you hear Heather Small, surely one of the best British female singers of the last 50 years, with a beautiful strong and emotional voice. That lovely voice doesn't go to waste, as all the songs are intelligent and grown up, something that isn't the norm for music to dance to. The musicians behind all this are good enough, but maybe not quite as good as they ought to be, and the production is smooth and professional. Oh, and a bit too manufactured and slick for my ears, but that's a little quibble not everyone will share. All in all a very good album.
Aretha Franklin & Billie Holiday get 5 stars, so this has to get less - it just isn't as spontaneous, for a start. But you have to be pretty special to be compared to Aretha & Billie. If you shopped carefully you could get all 4 original M People albums for the price of a round of drinks in Wetherspoons. What are you waiting for?

Absolutely stunning stuff

M People has always been one of my favourite groups. The songs they have published over the years have been so appropriate to the world we live in, even though many people have not always had the appreciation of being faced with that blatant truth.
Elegant Slumming starts off with One Night In Heaven, a joyful track. Moving on Up is one of those tracks that you play with vindication after a difficult time... the words "I'm movin' on up, you're movin' on out... nothing can stop me" are so true and are so self-medicating :)
Colour My Life is a bit sad. Renaissance is funky, although it is a bit repetitive. Don't Look Any Further is... just great. All in all, there is a track for every mood.

Ever since 1991, when M People hit the music scene with Northern Soul, people for all walks of life have flocked to listen to them. One of the most memborable classic albums by M People is Elegant Slumming. Winning the Mercury Music Prize, by beating off groups like Pulp and Blur, M People have taken the world with storm with Elegant Slumming.END

This album is definitely ONE-OF-A-KIND! If you want music and voice to say something to your soul listen to this. I've been hooked on this recording for years now and it's still the BEST! HATS OFF TO THE M-PEOPLE ! for giving me what I want..... ! Thanks !
