Back around 1974 or 75 when I was around 15 years old I came across a book in the school library called "Electronics For Schools" by RA Sparkes. It was great it have me simple, practical, projects with wood, nails, soldering iron, and a few transistors etc. What made it work for me was I could go into a company and buy the transistors (e.g. BC108) by the name in the book and they handed them over the counter. I think they were a bit frustrated by a kid buying one or two transistors and a few resistors.
Using this book I built a few little projects flashing lights and this led to my later doing a Batchelor of Engineering (Electronics) and today I'm a software developer. I earn my income from that degree and from a spark from Sparkes (I could not resist that) that he put in this book.
