A pleasant suprise 15 Jan 2011
Having looked at Nikon flash guns and been discouraged by their prices I was a little hesitant about purchasing this unit due to the very reasonable price. I have been pleased just how well built and effective this unit has proved to be. It has produced some very good informal portrait shots. It has full compatability with my Nikon D3000 and works well with the 18-55 kit lens, the 55-200mm telescopic lens and also with the 35mm prime lens. The TTL system coordinates effectively with the camera via the hot shoe and the flash is reasonably powerful up to about 3 metres after which power falls off quite sharply. It is not really powerful enough for larger group photos. Like all flashes the light can be a little harsh but the swivling/tilting head allow bounce flash to counter this. The built in diffuser and reflector are also a bonus. It can also be used on manual settings to control the power output. The recycle rate is plenty fast enough for normal shots and always seems to be ready to fire by the time I want to press the shutter. I have not yet tried burst or continuous shooting mode. The unit seems quite sturdy and well put together. Then only minor niggles are the on-off/power adjustment switch which is low set and can be difficult to turn (especially wearing gloves!) and the door for the batteries which has a rather loose hinge arrangement and seems a possible source of future problems. For the price this has so far proved to be an excellent piece of kit.

I bought this flash after reading numerous reviews on flickr and other photography sites. The flash met all my expectations and more. The dial is a super fast way of regulating between iTTL and manual power (an excellent feature in my opinion). Battery life is the same as a Metz 36. Recharge time on charged batteries is good but not as fast as I had read. I would advise anyone looking at a cheap alternative to a Nikon SB-600 to consider this flash. The only missing feature is strobe.

I received my Speedlite flasgun today, so I haven't tested it all the way. But for what I have tested in an indoor situation, where the internal flash causes a problem (taking a photo of my guitar on the wall, where the internal flash causes reflection on the body and also an 'ugly' shade) the picture now looks superb!

Also the brightness (fully adjustable), the way TTL works and the speed of this flashgun, keeping up with the burst shots of the camera, promises to guarantee a whole lot of photographing pleasure!
