Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

On the face of it The Godfather isn’t an obvious movie to be made into a video game, what with it being more than thirty years old and staring a lot of middle age men in hats. On the other hand it is incredibly violent; and morally ambiguous enough to make an excellent period version of Grand Theft Auto…which is exactly what this appears to be.

Although lots of missions from and inspired by the movie are promised you actually play a completely new character and control them over a period of ten years, between 1945 and 1955. During this time you get to take part in all manner of mobster type activities including managing protection rackets, assassination missions and full blown gang wars against the five different mob families in the game.

Despite all the big name stars lending their voices and faces to the game it’s actually New York that seems to be the main star with a highly impressive, if somewhat sparsely populated, virtual city. The graphics are excellent, although it remains to be seen just how much variety there is to the missions, considering the game can’t really go to some of the more surreal excess of Grand Theft Auto. So even if this isn’t quite an offer you can’t refuse, it’s at least looking like one to be taken very seriously. --Harrison Dent

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality gaming experience 18 Aug 2006
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
First of all I think you should ignore the review by 'themanwithimpeccabletaste' his so called impeccable taste is somewhat tarnished by the fact that he's never watched the greatest gangster movie of all time. On to the game, I loved it! I thought the graphics were excellent for a PS2 game (especially a third person shooter), the cut scenes looked good, the characters moved like real people and they looked like the characters from the movie as well (for the most part eh, michael)

There was decent enough voice acting as well (again for the most part, cough, michael). As for the storyline well you can't really go wrong with the Godfather to work from, there are subtle changes here and there but that is mostly to do with that you play a totally imagined character not featured in any of the films, this can work well though, placing you in many of the films most famous moments without replacing any of the famous characters and in that sense it is cleverly done. That brings me on to what I like best about the game, the customisation of the character. Before you join the family you can make your character look like you want him to look and to be fair there are a good deal of customisation options to choose from, give him scars, moles change his facial features make him fat thin or in the middle. Also as you progress in the game you can buy him different clothes and give him new styles, you can also name him what you like. Yes the storyline is linear but at least you can put your mark on the game unlike gta which has a linear story and limited custom options.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Experience 18 April 2006
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I personally am a fan of the films and the book, and was scepical about buying the game reading the mixed reviews on the internet, but when i got the game i was suprised by just how fun the game is. The gameplay is superb, easy to control and the gun fighting in my opinion is far superior to the gta series, even though i am a massive fan, the missions draw you into the story making you feel part of the 'family'. The side missions like hit contracts and extortion of business are very enjoyable as well, the hit contracts giving you back stroies into the gangsters dealings with the Corleones.

The only problems i think that are in the game are the driving, which if you hit a car, no matter how small the hit or speed you are driving at, always stops you outright and you cannot shoot from your car. Also building interiors are heavily recycled, which is good if you want to memorise the layout of a warehouse but does get a tad boring.

Even though i am a critic of EA's other games this game nearly lives up to the masterpiece of a film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really really good 20 May 2006
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I wasn't planning on buying this but saw it cheap and thought why not. Very glad I did because it's excellent! Bit of a GTA rip off, but in my opinion much better. For a start the graphics are much better. The storyline is much more involving, and I actually watch the cut scenes because I'm following the story, whereas with GTA I just wanted them finished ASAP. Personally I find the missions on GTA a real chore, and not particularly enjoyable (after a while I just end up driving around or fighting with people!), but the missions on this are really fun, and you cant wait to get on to the next one. Overall a really good game, and unlike the GTA games I think I will play this to the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give it time 5 April 2006
I was originally going to review this game after just a couple of hours of gameplay...
After all, it didnt have the 'grand theft auto' style gameplay I was expecting, and actually found the focus was on foot missions, with a clunky interface reminiscant of 'The Getaway'.
However, I decided to wait to give it a chance, and I'm glad I did.
Now i'm 15 hours in, 50% complete, and, well the missions are still mainly on foot based, through the clunky interface, which you get used to, but sometimes can be a handicap in sticky situations.
My main gripe is the camera, while you can move it yourself to get great views around you, when its tracking your movement it can be slow to follow a change of direction.
But those are my only real gripes, the game has the same addictiveness, and free roam style of Grand theft auto, and you will spend hours playing, and catch yourself 'just one more mission'.
The side games of assasinations and extorting buisnesses is a nice touch, and gives the game extra depth - although the interiors are very repetitive, with what seems like only about 5 on offer.
While this is handy, meaning you know your way around and where the enemies are hiding, it is a touch dissapointing and does get dull.
All in all, its a good game, flawed, but still enjoyable, and if you like GTA/Getaway style games, you will probably enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love This Game! 27 July 2006
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is really a great game. The mob face thing is a great idea, finally i can choose what i look like on a game, unlike gta where you have to be some rubbish chracter. The storyline is actually done really well, some people have said that it doesn't follow the story, but it actually does very well. I decided to watch the film again to see how well it followed it and it is done well, it's not in the right order in some places though, but who cares it even had the same speech from the film, i could easily see what part it was doing in the film on the game. The fighting is great on this game, using the stick instead of the button bashing. Shhoting is fine, using the Bond Everything or Nothing style of choosing where you shoot you're target. It is a shame that the great Al Pacino couldn't give his face and details, as Michael is a huge part in the film, but has little to do with the game, as he looks nothing at all like Pacino. But i understand Pacino's reasons for not doing Godfather as he is doing Scarface, where without him in that would be a real disaster. My other criticism is the driving, there are about 5 cars to choose from and they all handle the same. Poorly. Also how fast do you want the police in this game! There you are in your little automobile slowly trying to escape, and you have the police shooting you constantly, you not being able shoot back for some reason, unless you have Sonny or Rocco with you. But the police will always catch up with you no matter how fast you are. But that isn't a huge part in the game thank god! But i do love this game, taking over businesses, robbing banks, gunning down rival families is such fun. It is a lengthy game too, it will take about 40 hours to complete everything. Read more ›
