Amazon.co.uk Review

When Sony released the PlayStation2, there were only a few standout games. One of them, SSX, brought snowboarding to people who didn't even like snowboarding. Now Xbox fans get a new reason to stay indoors during the cold winter months. SSX Tricky is the game, and it more than lives up to the moniker.

Tricky removes two characters from the previous game and adds five new ones. It adds two new race locations to the already beefed-up World Circuit (Garibaldi and Alaska). The developers also added features to the older tracks, effectively making them new again. Tricky improves the graphics a bit and refines the controls. The game even tweaks the basic gameplay by letting you upgrade your boarder's stats in races, but also forcing you to attempt and master the showoff mode. And EA improved the challenge by evening out the learning curve. SSX tended to be a cakewalk until the later races in each set, but this time your rivals get more intense and aggressive depending upon the lap you're taking.

As in the first game, personality is everything. This is true not only in terms of voice acting, but also in how you treat opponents. The game has a few basic attitudes. If you block and attack characters too much, they'll remember and actively seek you out. If you help one or two of them, they'll become your allies, warning you of danger or fending off attackers. The changes are deep enough to change quite a bit, and they'll delight even fans who are tired of, or who mastered, the first game on the PS2. Maybe that's the most impressive über-trick of them all. --Bob Andrews

Product Description

Grab your board and take on the slopes of SSX as you've never seen them before. Two brand-new runs, six never-before-seen riders and tons of original tricks, shortcuts and jumps make SSX Tricky the ultimate snowboarding experience.

With voices supplied by celebrities such as Oliver Platt and Macy Gray, the SSX Tricky riders come to life on the snow-covered icy mountain courses. Establish friendships, create rivalries and show off your high-flying skills in three different types of race. When you're ready to catch real air, reach into your bag and bust out one of the crazy new über-tricks that take airborne flight to the next level with flips, twirls and more. New Garibaldi and Alaska courses let you get more vertical and catch more air, while all the original courses have some new surprises. Six new riders join most of the original SSX crew to provide a wide range of abilities and competition. The Xbox version uses DVD media that allow for additional content including a new DVD-like 3-D front end as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes and production footage ranging from voice-recording sessions to off-the-mountain interaction between the riders.

4.0 out of 5 stars SSX ? It's better than that!, 29 Aug 2002
This review is from: SSX Tricky (Xbox) (Video Game)
Having never played the original SSX game - I have little knowledge of how EA have improved the game. I do know that the new features on this game are: Surround sound, New Levels, New Players, and new Game Play elements.

Presentation/Visuals
The animation for this game is amazing - with full on facial features and extra detail to outfits and boards, the boarders appear fresh. In the game play you can often wander off piste, until the game places you back on track, the mountain is not off limits. Sometimes you get the odd clipping, or the refreh rate occasionally falters but it is eye candy at it's best. There are 10 levels each one offering shortcuts, huge drops and vast open spaces with a great emphasis on detail. One of my favourite details are the snow tracks which trail behind you, perfect!

Game Play/Playability
I have had the game for 2 weeks now and I have only played with 4 characters, there are 12 characters in all, each of them distinguished from the other boarders in style, personality and playability. To progress to the unlocked boarders you have to play one of the four boarders offered at the beginning of the game. My favourite character is Psymon, his celebrity voice over is "Jim Rose" (look it up!) - he is what you would call "A PHREAK" he loves pain, one of his catchphrases (when he falls) being "Who cares!?! I'm a nihilist!!!" , in his UBER club gear, with his many tattoos and spiky hairdo make him one of the coolest boarders.

There are several play modes to the game -
1. Freeride (1 player, self explanitory)
2. Single Race mode
This is where you can time race - and beat your previous records.
3. World Circuit - Showoff Mode
This is where you progress through the different levels using your skills to gain points to win medals.
4. World Circuit - Race mode
You against all the other boarders, using your wit, skill and control, push or race your way to victory.
5. 2 Player
Play against an opponent.
6. Trick Book
Fill your trick book up to earn extra play modes - new outfits, boards and ranking.

Sound
This is where I imagine the Surround sound would come in handy. I dont currently have surround sound - if I did I would be able to hear Run DMC, Several Voices, Birds, Crowds and Helicopters in full force, However! - with my miniscule speakers I still get sound satisfaction every time I hear "Its tricky, It's Tricky".

Overall
The game is annoyingly addictive. Annoying because when you get to be a master and you want to get that LAST gold it can be infuriating when you miss 1 grind. Addictive because you wont be going to bed till 3am in the morning and your neighbours will hate you because of the constant "Its Tricky" or "Yeah Baby" booming from your speakers.

You'll be playing it for ages, and when your done - there will always be those damn records!

5.0 out of 5 stars God bless the creators of this game!, 20 July 2003
This review is from: SSX Tricky (Xbox) (Video Game)
This game is awesome, the graphics, the gameplay, the tricks, the characters. This game will have you glued to your screens. There are celebrity voices such as Macy Gray, David Arquette and even Lucy Lui! One of the best characteristics of this game is the insane uber-tricks where the characters do back-flips and everything on their boards in mid-air! You can also develop an enemy out there in the snow by pushing them over or by 'accedentally' bumping into them. as the game progresses you can unlock new courses, new players, new boards and new outfits. This game is fun to play aswell as being exciting and on moments funny. (I can't forget to say ASTOUNDING!) Buy it! Even if you're not really good at video games, it is sooo easy to pick up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cartoony style, but addictive, 30 Aug 2002

Seriously fun game. My wife chose this as the bundle game when she bought the Xbox for my birthday, and it has probably been played more than our other five titles put together. Why? Because my four year old son Thomas is seriously hooked on it and we get to play together a lot as well. Easy enough for beginners, and so many ways to develop in the game (new characters, slopes, tricks, boards, custumes, etc) that there is always another thing worth playing for. Also, the DVD has a lot of value-add material such as movies about the design and concepts. Action is rather "cartoony" and the laws of physics get a more than a bit bent, but all ages seem to really enjoy it.
