The Quake games have had a long-standing relationship with the PC user, dating back to their predecessors "Doom" and its sequels, and has by many gamers been considered to be some of the best first-person shooters on the platform. Now is the time, like many of its predecessors, for the PlayStation 2 to have a crack at the whip, and it copes with the job elegantly, hardly breaking a sweat.
The player is placed in a beautifully detailed arena with a bunch of nasty killers and has to survive as long as possible until he or she is the only survivor, or finds the flag and is able to hold it for one minute. It sounds simple, but it's anything but. With stunning graphics, amazing speed and stomach-churning sounds, this game looks good and plays well But it lacks the one element that makes the PC and Dreamcast versions of the game so good: online play. Having said that, it compensates with a four-player option--allowing up to four people to play on the same console in quad-screen action. It's great fun, and the graphics hardly suffer at all. --Robert Hyde

A brilliant conversion of an already amazing game,
By A Customer
This review is from: Quake III: Revolution (Video Game)
This is the third incarnation of Quake 3, after the original PC and Dreamcast versions. It has come out of nowhere, EA havin denied its existence for months. It has, it fact, been in development since July. The good news is that the conversion is brilliant. Bullfrog has done a good job. The action is fast and furious, always moving at 60fps. The four player mode is not a let down, unkike a certain Unreal Tournament! The single player game is tough, with five difficulty levels. The multiplayer (what the game was really designed for) will keep you and your friends blasting for ages. In all, a brilliant game in all respects - graphics (some of the the best on PS2, if not the best), sound effects, and most importantly, gameplay. The bad news? (no game is perfect) - if you have ever played Quake 3 before (either on the PC or Dreamcast), you will not be finding anything new, apart from a few new maps. If you already own Quake, think carefully. Also, the music is pretty bad. But this does not detract from the overall feel of the game (if you hate it that much, you can just turn it off). Lastly, there is no online play - Sony have yet to bring out their Broadband adapter. You do get a four player mode, but really, this does not beat online play. So, get this game if - you have never played Quake before, or if you do not/did not get Timesplitters or Unreal Tournament. Quake 3 is the best first person shooter on the PS2 at the moment, so what more recommendiation do you need?

A GAME BEST SHARED!!!!,
By Alex Hopkins (Bath England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quake III: Revolution (Video Game)
QuakeIII is the latest in a long line of fantastic games from the original developers of the First Person Shoot-em-up - Wolfenstein 3D.Back then, on the PC, when the internet was solely for the DOD and a few choice University's, this was an amazing 1 Player game. Since then, it's later incarnations have become gradually more and more aimed at network / internet gaming as this has become the choice battleground for gamers, and this has lead to Quake III being a very poor one player game.... But.... If you have 2 (or preferably more) controllers, and friends to play against... or are lucky enough to have a Net Connection for your Playstation II, then this is a MUST-BUY. The Multiplayer aspects of this game are superb, the graphics are stunning - the new rendering techniques make full use of the PSII, and the variety of Multiplayer games and Options is fantastic. One criticism however is that it is hard to handicap, so don't play against someone who's much better than you, or you will find yourself facing the floor a few too many times for it to be funny.

QUAKE 3 SHAKES THE FOUNDATIONS,
By A Customer
This review is from: Quake III: Revolution (Video Game)
At last...a game worth buying the PS2 for. After the excellent Timesplitters showed us the speed of the machine, now we are shouwn the graphics. This game is fiddly to get used to (adopting the Timesplitters contol method - so if you can play 'splitters, then it is easy). However, after a few skirmishes, your insticts take over. Before you know it, you a fragging 5 enemies in 3 seconds! AI is fantastic, each opponent with a different personality. Watch as one opponent gets QUAD DAMAGE, and the others turn and run (excellent to pick off as they panic past you) Fun in one player mode, excellent in 2 player. Buy this game, get a multi-tap, and slaughter your mates!!!fun fun fun!
