The first thing players will notice is how the graphics represent such a tremendous leap beyond the series' previous instalments. In general, players are nicely animated, and there is a good amount of detail to the arenas. However, the individual-player graphics are uneven. While most of the bodies are well rendered, many of the faces are way off the mark. Virtual Shaquille O'Neal's face looks nothing like the real Shaq's face, and most of the NBA's lesser names are completely unrecognisable. Some marquee players, such as Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan, look fairly authentic.
While the PS2 usually plays an intelligent game of basketball, the controls in NBA Live 2001 have a slightly sluggish feel to them and take some getting used to. Also, EA stripped away both the franchise mode and the NBA challenges (three-point contests, etc.), which had been in previous incarnations of the Live series. There is, however, an excellent one-on-one mode, as well as many legendary NBA players of the past to play with and against.
While NBA Live 2001 doesn't have all you'd hope for in the first pro-basketball game for the PS2, it does have enough game to keep you playing all season long. --Mark Brooks

Not the best but playable,
This review is from: NBA Live 2001 (Video Game)
I have mixed opinions of this game. Graphically what this game does do is ok, put not as good as EA's very own Madden and NHL. Tha gameplay delivers what every other game before it has done, but little else, but why fix something if it is not broken. My only quarm is that tackling seems a bit hard to do without comitting a defensive foul. The cut-scenes are few but they are repeated over and over again. The games good, but maybe I'm not much of a basketball fan.

The best thing that I can reveal about this game is the releastic images and gameplay that it has to offer. There are various arenas to shoot hoops, and the traditional courts. This is a good buy for any sport lover as it will keep you occupied for hours.

This game has all the fancy bits at the loading screens etc, but when it came to plying a game it was no where near the quality EA normally produce. Graphics? I've seen better animation on the Simpsons, it was soo jerky I could'nt belive it it plays like the game has'nt been finished yet. But all the players look just like there real life counter parts and you have access to all the stats in the world, if this what you like this will interest you. When it came to playing the actual game (basketball) this was a bitter and shocking dissapointment I also have a Dreamcast and was looking forward to something better than or as good as NBA 2K. NBA 2K is still the best basketball game on any console and that was made in 1999.
