Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

If you think about it, the noble sport of boxing is the perfect basis for a videogame: it’s thrilling to watch but, in real life, painful to practise. And one franchise towers over the boxing games genre like Muhammad Ali in his prime: Fight Night. And now Fight Night Champion promises to be the franchise’s finest moment – its Thrilla in Manila or Rumble in the Jungle. Hence the change in naming convention: coming after Fight Night Round 4, you would have expected it to be called Round 5.

For Fight Night Champion to represent a quantum leap over Round 4 is a major achievement in itself: Round 4 stunned everyone with its astonishing level of graphical realism. Champion builds on that to such an extent it will surely be hailed as the most realistic-looking sports sim ever, adding a dynamic blood system (which could leave the ring awash after a particularly brutal bout), plus even more accurate bruising and body-deformation systems.

Champion Mode

One huge all-new feature is Champion Mode: a full story mode, in which you take control of raw but talented middleweight Andre Bishop and guide him through a career, which even encompasses prison-brawling and bare-knuckle fighting, alongside Bishop’s progression through the boxing ranks. Champion Mode was inspired by classic boxing movies, and adds a whole new cinematic angle to the Fight night blueprint.

Full-Spectrum Punch Control

Fight Night Champion also boasts a completely revamped control system, which developer EA Canada has dubbed, rather grandiosely, Full Spectrum Punch Control. Fiendishly clever, it has been designed both to make the game more accessible for novices and to let more experienced gamers exercise incredibly fine control over their punching. Basically, Full Spectrum Punch Control maps punching to the right analogue stick (with boxer movement mapped to the left stick). So, if you move the right stick to the right, your boxer will unleash a right-handed punch, and if you move it to the left, he will punch with his left. The angle you choose determines the type of punch: flicking upwards will launch a straight punch, to the side a hooking punch and downwards an uppercut – with a full spectrum of intermediate punches in between, hence the name.

If you don’t fancy the sound of that, you’ll still be able to use the face buttons to punch: you can choose from a number of controller maps. Also, this time around, Fight Night Champion makes use of a heavy-punch-modifier, and lets you perform stepping punches, where you move in towards your opponent (which adds power, but are easier to block). The game has a completely new reflexive blocking system, and it will be important to master subtle techniques such as weaving, stepping and ducking. Fight Night Champion takes account of fatigue much more realistically than its predecessors: punches thrown when fatigued even have different animations.

Legacy Mode and Online Gyms

Legacy Mode, in time-honoured Fight Night fashion, lets you generate a boxer, take on champion boxers of yore and work him up through the ranks, both offline and online. Another cool feature is Online Gyms which, as the name suggests, lets you create an online gym in which you can slug it out with your mates to decide who is top dog. And if you reckon you can handle it, you can take on other people’s Online Gyms via so-called Rivalry Challenges. One of the joys of your Online Gym is that you can make the rules – so you’ll be able to fight 15-round bouts or change the round length if you feel that way inclined.

There’s not even a shadow of doubt that Fight Night Champion will come closer to capturing the experience of being a boxer than any game before it. Indeed, it may well prove to be the most realistic sports game ever, bar none. If you’re a true lover of the pugilistic arts, then it’s the game you’ve been waiting for all your life.

Product Description

Survive the brutal road to redemption with Fight Night Champion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I had hoped.. 1 May 2011
By CP
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
I pre-ordered this game and have been playing it off and on for a few months now as I wanted to give it some time before I wrote a review (mainly because I wasn't that impressed with it and wanted to work at it and change my mind as I've always enjoyed the previous fight night games).

Sadly, my opinion hasn't improved. Other than the Champion mode which is fun until the final fight which is overally difficult (a sign of things to come in the Legacy mode !) and frustrating.

Legacy mode promises so much but all it delivers is frustration due to the apparent inability of your boxer to land any really significant punches whilst your AI opponent lands at will once frustration gets the better of you and you start trying to brawl. I altered my tactics (tried boxing at range, brawling inside and a combo of both) but nothing seemed to work so I've finally given up and am now writting the most negative review of any of the Fight Nights I've played.

On the positive side, the 2 player game is still great fun (mainly due to the fact that both of you will suffer from the same gameplay difficulties leading to an ability to actually land some punches !!).

Maybe I'm getting old but I want to enjoy playing games on the PS3 but with the frustrating nature of this game, the overally complicated games that FIFA and Pro-Evo have become (all with silly button combo's to do rediculous tricks) and the stamina sapping GT5 maybe I need to find another hobby as gaming seems to have become more a test of patience than being enjoyable !!

I guess if you've got loads of time on your hands and can play these games for endless hours you might start to perfect the techniques required but I don't and just want to enjoy games that I can pick up every so often, play for a few hours and have some fun !!

3.0 out of 5 stars Gruelling 19 Jun 2011
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
EA obviously were aware this series was suffering after the last instalment was criticised for being overly involved and laborious. With Champion they have addressed this with the inclusion of a story mode which traces the classic rags to riches to rags to riches boxing fable. The story, however, is quite short and effectively a tutorial which pits you against in fight challenges crooked judges, fighting with one hand etc. There is some fun to be had while it lasts but last it does not.

So, it's on to the legacy mode. This is classic build-your-boxer-and-rise-through-the-rankings fare. Like many fighting simulations, you have a calendar to schedule fights against and training programmes to prepare your fighter with the trick being to ensure your fighter fits in sufficient training yet is well rested before the fight date.

This edition makes a lot of noise about enhancements to the fighting system - specifically in-fighting. You can mix it up on the inside, Mexican style, or you can box on the outside - there are a wide variety of classic stances and style to choose from. Achieving objectives during matches or training well earns you XP points which you can spend on the overall proficiency of your fighter and not just on general values like endurance or power, but by enhancing specific punches in your repetoire.

EA have tried to make the training sub-games more interesting but the reality is, point sparring, combination heavy bag work etc. do get monotonous. The prospect of sparring before a fight which will probably last 10 rounds is almost enough to put you off training at all.

And a lot of fights do go the distance as in actual gameplay you find yourself moved to play one of two ways - toe to toe until someone falls over or jabbing on the outside for a decision. The simpler punch control system assigns specific punches to buttons with R2 to vary the power. However, it is difficult to land telling blows and your boxer will tire quickly as you find this out. So many of my fights petered out to decision with my exhausted boxer circling my tireless opponent while peppering him with soft jabs. Mixing it on the inside results in the opponent taking much punishment but landing the telling blows which hurt your fighter with alarming regularity.

EA have done nothing to enhance the dizzy mode. When you hurt an opponent you are effectively playing a guessing game where you have a limited period of time to land one scoring blow while he blocks with eerie efficiency. In real boxing a hurt opponents' defence disintegrates when they are hurt - perhaps it would have been better to have to land a succession of blows or a particularly telling blow on a staggered opponent to actually put him down?
On the receiving end, you are still required to align the XY axis points to climb from a knockdown - as with previous editions, one knockdown is recoverable, 2 difficult and three impossible.

On the plus side, there are a huge number of licensed boxers to choose from and the presentation and graphics are better than ever. EA still haven't managed to reproduce the jolting impact of a hard punch - punches still push at targets rather than slam into them - but the animation of facial distortions as blows land is still impressive.

All in all, this is another still slicker refinement of the Fight Night franchise - but is it fun? I love boxing and have played many boxing games but I couldn't say I really enjoyed playing this game - it's something of a chore and that's not what games should be about.

1.0 out of 5 stars No where as good as Fight Night 4. 9 May 2011
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
This game is ridiculous. The fight with 'Hayes' his so frustrating, his left hooks knock you out even while you block.

Fight Night was challenging, I lost many times. But it was fun! It was also realistic in the sense that you couldnt knock out a boxer at the start of a match while he was blocking.

I also hate the jabs in this, the boxers cant even throw a straight jab properly at good speed. It seems so slow.

Games are supposed to be fun not annoying and frustrating. This is the first game on PS3 which I absolutely hate!
