Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

From the off, it's fair to concede that the world's best-selling action football game, FIFA 2005, hasn't changed an awful lot in the past twelve months. Those who bought the last version will be entirely familiar with the game's look and feel, and could rightly argue that once more this new version is an evolution at best. But it's still quite a good one. The FIFA series has, in recent times, got into the habit of adding one big new feature each year, with middling successes. Last year's, if you remember, was the impressive-but-tricky off the ball control. This year we get a simpler addition, but a far more effective one. It's the first touch option, and it genuinely can open the game up, whether you choose to use it for a quick pass or tighter control. And it works because it's straightforward--there's no endless messing around with buttons to get it moving.

The rest of the game attracts the usual annual pros and cons. Its presentation is second-to-none, and for a more attacking-focused game, you need look no further. What's more, the single player mode is substantial, and very long lasting. The downside is the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise which is, and remains, the choice of the hardcore gamer. Yet that doesn't mean there's not fun to be had with FIFA 2005. Quite the contrary, in fact. Every year, FIFA can be relied on to provide an entertaining, engrossing and long-lasting football game. Thus, whilst it might be in second place, and this latest release doesn't change that, it remains a strong and worthwhile runner-up.--Simon Brew

Manufacturer's Description

All great players have a great first touch and, thanks to EA Sports’ all-new fluid player kinetic system, the same is now true for FIFA Football 2005 users. This year, a player’s first touch becomes the ultimate gift to those who can think quickly and act fast to outsmart the opposition. A brand new animation system ensures that every button press is directly mirrored on the pitch, accurately reflecting the speed and vision of the world’s greatest players. Featuring more official team and league licenses than any other football game (including lower leagues from the most competitive European countries), an enhanced and extended Career Mode, and an all-new Creation Zone that lets you customise new tournaments or even put yourself into the game, FIFA Football 2005 is the only complete, authentic and intelligent football experience.

Since selling the ol' PS2, if there's one game I miss it's Pro Evo. I grew up with Konami's football games dammit, and was very much used to deriding fans of Fifa. Fifa's never had anywhere near the depth or 'feel' of PES, in spite of it's authenticity. You couldn't help thinking however, how nice it would be if EA could retain all the good Fifa stuff of the past, but take a good look at PES and improve the gameplay and feel, to give us a killer footie game. As a Cube owner too, it doesn't help that you have very little choice. Winning Eleven 6 costs a bomb on import, and Fifa 2004 is too much like Ice Hockey but with a green pitch. So, with some very poor magazine reviews in mind, it was with some fear that I bought Fifa 2005...

Make no mistake this is a very different ball game to '04. Play is fluid now, the players themselves far more expressive than ever before. Goal scoring is a joy, and a surprise when after many hours play you are still finding new ways of scoring and rounding defenders. First Touch is no gimmick, but a real stroke of genius that separates the men from the boys. Incorporating the C-stick for tricks and moves is a great idea, so much so that you wonder why no-one did it before. It's truly a surprise to see all this in a Fifa title, where change is something you hope for every year but never get. Never before have I ever wanted to throw a weeks sickie just to play the latest Fifa!

Graphically speaking, in Fifa 2004, it all looked rather blurry and, well, cheaply ported over. This time however, things are MUCH improved, with colour and detail in the visuals, not to mention the demise of that awful screen judder that plagued last years game. The only peculiarity this year is the bizarre omission of the on-screen ref and linesmen. Odd, but thankfully it's something you'll never really care about.

It's the game though, rather than the presentation that will grab you this year. There are so many modes to start with (let alone unlock) that you'll be well occupied for some time. The 15 season career mode for example, is really challenging Pro Evo's Master league for depth and addictiveness.

Pay no attention to the hordes of prejudiced PES fans, who play 2 minutes of Fifa, then place thumb and forefinger to the bridge of their noses, and with eyes closed histrionically declare; "Well it's not Pro Evo is it?". Play it for yourself. Ignore the unbelievably negative reviews it's been getting. EA has finally applied the finish to deliver a truly Beatiful Game. And if you'd have told me I'd be saying this a year ago I would've eaten my Wednesday shirt!

Great game 29 Mar 2005
I bought FIFA 2003 just after 2004 came out and i thought it was a brilliant game though lacking something to make it a classic. Then 2004 came out and it got really really bad reviews. So when 2005 came out i bought it quikly and was not dissapointed at all. The first touch is a stroke of genius. it can really slice open a deffence if used properly. But if you touch in the wrong direction the other team will grab the ball off you. Another great feature is the create a player it allows you to create detailed players to whatever level of goodness you want. Ontop of all the features the game play is excellent. When playing 2003 i found that most goals i scored looked the same. This has changed totally and there are many ways to score beautiful goals.
The best mode though has to be manager which is just class. You start off with a not so good team but as the journey goes on you are offered better teams until you hopefully reach your goal and become a 5 star manager. This game is great. Better than pro evo!

I was really looking forward to fifa 2005, being a fan of the series, so as soon as it did, I immediately snatched it up. I wasn't disapointed. The first touch control with the C-stick is genius. If you get it right, you can split the defense right open. If you get it wrong, the defender takes the ball straight away from you. The only downside is this:

IT TAKES UP TOO MUCH OF YOUR MEMORY!!!

I had to go and buy a new memory card, as where other games take 5-10 blocks, mine has used about 200 so far.

OVERALL

A great game, but you might need a new memory card once you get started.

Good game, but frustrating.
The other reviews are right about a lot of things. The one thing I want to add is that if you haven't been playing FIFA for years, scoring goals is very, very hard. Read more
