2.0 out of 5 stars dont bother 25 July 2012
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
i use to have this game, bought it when i first got the ps3. i was excited about this game as the past 2 games were pretty awesome, def jam vendetta and fight for NY. However my excitement soon turned to absolute boredom within the first half an hour of playing this game. Unlike the past games where you could use the environment against your opponent, use weapons and the over the top special moves and the good story lines this game kinda went backwards. The storyline is pretty average, and the fighting in this game is awful awful awful. Customisation is pretty lacking and after a while you get bored of fighting against the same artists over and over again in 10 different environments.

This game could have been so much more but rather than take this game and continue on from how good fight for NY was they completely started over again and ruined what could have been a good fighting series. The game lacks imagination and is boring and repetetive. i sold this game after only having this only a couple of weeks.

My personal advice, stick with fight for NY on the PS2. I wouldnt bother with this game. Huge let down

2.0 out of 5 stars Stylish, but no substance 10 Jun 2008

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Def Jam ICON is fun in short bursts. But ultimately, it's a shallow, sluggish fighting game which can frustrate immensely. The fairly deep fighting system of earlier Def Jam games has been replaced by more OTT grappling. This makes ICON more fun to pick up and play, but is much easier to master.

More effort has been made with the single player mode than previously. The Build a Label mode gives the option to release records and sign artists like Ludacris and T.I. As the game progresses, the needs of your chosen artists have to be catered for, although this involves nothing more than saying Yes or No to something. Shops and jewellery stores offer limited levels of customisation and the fighting environments are imaginative and well designed. The scratch ability also links the music and the action imaginatively.

Yet like most EA games, ICON is highly polished, but lacks any real depth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Def Jam, Slightly dissapointed. 25 May 2007
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Unlike Def Jam: Fight for NY there are no weapons, also the game is trying to be too realistic were as in Fight for New York It was a very fun game which I could play on end. Overall ICON has amazing graphics and was merged Hip-Hop and fighting well. But its 'fighting' and not wrestling.

2.0 out of 5 stars Superficially fun 29 Jun 2008

Def Jam Icon is one of the shallowest games I've played in years and is highly repetitive and boring.

You get to create what your character looks like but you have to be male and you must be some shade of black/mixed. This character then goes through the trials and tribulations of becoming a big-shot music producer and you fight your way through all the confrontations in between.

Sounds like it might make a good game but it's VERY linear and pretty much every decision you make in the management half of the game has little or no effect on anything. How good would it be to download your own tunes onto the PS3 and mix them into new tracks for the game? Tough, you can't.

There are about 10 different environments to fight in but they all get rather tiresome after the millionth battle and there are never any really cool moments when you interact with the crumbling area. Def Jam Icon is all flash and no substance I'm afraid, I actually liked Def Jam Fight for NY a lot better.

2.0 out of 5 stars What have they done!? 22 Dec 2007

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
This game was a big disappointment especially after Def Jam: Fight for NY. Def Jam: Fight for NY was a amazing game but this was such a let down, don't get me wrong the graphics are spectacular but the gameplay is AWFUL! i can't stand with what they have done to the game. You now fight to music this invovles no tatics to what to do basically just press the same old buttons till the music K.O your opponent. The gameplay is fairly enjoyable at first but after a while it is repetitive and boring. The storyline is rubbish unlike Fight for NY and basically the whole game has been ruined!

Avoid this game!

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh..... 15 Mar 2007
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I loved Def Jam: Fight For NY, it had everything; good graphics, BLAZIN moves, weapons, environmental attacks, good grapples and a great story. This however has only two of these features; Great Graphics (every fighter being fully rendered with every detail possible) and a good story. I've looked forward too this game since Fight For NY came out!! but i am dissapointed. It has no blazin moves, weapons, environmental attacks and the only grapples are small little tackedowns that dont really give u an advantage.

To me, i think this game will fun at first, but when you get bored of just throwing an opponent into something when there is a bass hit in the song... there will be nothing left to satisfy you..

I hope that the next Def Jam (if there is one) will be made by the spectacular EA (not EA Chicago) and it can get back to fighting's incredible underground roots.
