4.0 out of 5 stars So Much Fun, So Little Time 22 Mar 2007
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Black is good. Very good, in fact. The weapons are nothing short of exhilarating and you need not worry about using ammunition sparingly as bullets are liberally supplied at all times. This, of course, alows you to be equally liberal in your blasting of this ammunition into the enemy. That said, you will NEED to be liberal with your ammunition as it takes an extraordinary amount of bullets to kill someone. This, however, makes the weapons all the more fantastic to play with.

The graphics and sound are simply phenomenal.

BUT. And this is an almighty BUT. THIS GAME IS VERY, VERY SHORT. After having bought Black on the Sunday, and having completed it by Wednesday, I couldn't help but feel a little short - changed. There are barely any missions. So even replay value is somewhat diminished as going through the same narrow selection of missions becomes tiresome.

To be fair, an individual mission can be quite long. So, even if you want to play just one mission, be prepared to take a big chunk out of you day.

Overall, there is a lot of fun to be had here unloading '47s and RPGs into terrorists and inanimate objects alike. It looks and sounds brilliant and there is probably no better game for the PS2 in the "Lets Blow the F$*& Out of Evreything and Evreyone with a Kalashnikov" genre. But buy it cheap. Because the short length of this agme will leave you feeling distinctly out of pocket if you pay much over 10 Pounds for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Got plenty time on your hands? 2 Feb 2008
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Black was released to a fanfare of publicity when it was first came out. Destructable environments they said. And they were right. However, underneath the shrapnel is a bog standard shooter just like Killzone and medal of honour, sorry 'honor' but a pretty good one none the less.

The graphics are excellent, so is the sound and the music works well. Each mission involves shooting everyone and everything in sight. You can't turn a corner without something to blast. You play the usual saviour of your country given the sole responsibility of taking on hundereds of baddies for some obscure reason about black ops, retribution and stuff. Occassionally you get a computer buddy.

As you've probably read the baddies take a few hits to go down and at times the level is swarming with them. Ammo in plentiful if you walk over the corpes but watch the health as you can only backtrack so far. Top up health and reload ammo every opportunity.

There may be few levels but they are huge. They can cover more than one terrain and take at least an hour to work through, contantly blasting as we go. This is also the single biggest flaw with the game. Whilst the game has a few checkpoints per level if you die you go back to the last checkpoint. You then have to work back to where you were stuck. Not unusual. But. There are some nippy sections that require intense activity and repeated play to get through. After spending an hour or so getting there and another hour trying to get through the section, you are faced with a dilema. Do you continue for another couple of hours doggedly trying to complete the section - or - do you switch off and try tomorrow having to repeat the whole level again for an hour or so to get to where you left off.

5.0 out of 5 stars What can i say! 4 Aug 2007
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This has got to be the most fantastic shooting game ever made on the PS2!

Made by Hollywood graphics designers every bit of scenery can be destroyed whether its hotel signs or phone booths!

The gameplay and graphics are sublime and you can see the reflection of buildings being blown up on the car roofs.

Aiming is quite easy on the game and you can destroy all vehicles. Some enemies are hard to kill and take 7 shots while others need 1 shot.

The missions obviously get harder and harder but the final few missions are almost impossible.

Be prepared to spend hours on end playing this awesome game!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best 19 Feb 2007
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Black has got to be one of the greatest PS2 games ever. Huge guns, breathtaking graphics and a half decent plot? Interested? You should be. Black arrived just as hype for PS3 was growing (and therefore as demand for PS2 games dwindled), and for that reason it may well be the best (in my humble opinion) game ever.

The graphics are astounding. The first level plunges you into the heart of some war-torn city. Grenades fly, doors burst open under shotgun fire, and shot-up cars make for some of the most impressive PS2 explosions ever. And that's not even the best bit.

My favourite level was that set in the graveyard. Gravestones disintegrate under gunfire against the beautiful PS2 dawn (yes, I know, a bit wet, but it is beautiful). Fantastic 10/10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Black, PS2s best fps 14 Jun 2007
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is undoubtedly one of the best games you can buy for the PS2. It has impressive graphics and gameplay unrivalled by many other first person shooters.

Some magazine reviews branded the game as 'lacking in storyline' but I dispute this, i felt absorbed and involved with the main character.

The only negative points for me were the lack of variation in the enemy soldiers, and the fact that there was no two player option. These are tiny disappointments when compared to the brilliance of the game.
