Manufacturer's Description

A brand-new and unique First Person Shooter IP from the teams that brought you Gears of War and Painkiller. Epic Games, People Can Fly and Electronic Arts present Bulletstorm, an over-the-top shooter that introduces signature ‘kill with skill’ gameplay.

Set in a futuristic utopia, an elite peacekeeping force thwarts the rumblings of civil war. But deception within the ranks has caused two members of the most feared unit, Dead Echo, to strike out on their own.

Now washed-up mercenaries turned space pirates, Grayson Hunt and Ishi Sato’s latest quest for a quick buck goes south. Stumbling upon their ex-commander’s warship, the Ulysses, Grayson engages this behemoth head-on. Outmanned and outgunned, his only option is to ram the Ulysses in a suicidal bid at redemption.

Narrowly surviving a crash landing and now stranded on the abandoned paradise planet of Stygia, Grayson and Ishi find themselves surrounded by hordes of mutants and flesh-eating gangs. They survive on two objectives: get off the planet alive and exact revenge on the man who sent them there.

Taking the role of Grayson Hunt, wield over-the-top combat moves and some of the most uniquely innovative weapons ever seen in a first person shooter that all feed into Bulletstorm’s™ distinct ‘skillshot’ system for unprecedented levels of frantic gameplay. Unleash the Bulletstorm!

Preview:

The facts behind Bulletstorm read like a recipe for excitement among hardcore gamers: first off, it’s an all-new first-person shooter, a rare occurrence indeed; and then there’s its development pedigree, with Epic Games (Gears Of War) and People Can Fly (Painkiller) taking the reins jointly. As if that wasn’t enough, it goes out of its way to be as gleefully and gloriously over-the-top as it possibly can. The word ‘generic’ isn’t in Bulletstorm’s vocabulary.

Story-wise, Bulletstorm casts you as Grayson Hunt, an ex-mercenary turned space-pirate, whose spaceship collides with the military ship it is battling, and both crews end up stranded on Stygia, a once-paradisiacal planet now abandoned and overgrown. Teaming up with the cyborg Ishi Sato and, unwillingly, Trishka Novak from the rival ship, you embark on a mad quest to escape the planet by overcoming all manner of enemies which even include mutated boss-plants.

Bulletstorm’s gameplay eschews such mundane concepts as mere survival: the game is all about killing with style. Luckily, you have an unprecedented set of tools designed to let you do that. The weaponry, for example, is simply outrageous: the Boneduster, for example, is a quad-barrel shotgun, the Flail Gun fires two grenades chained together, which can wrap themselves around enemies before exploding, while the Bouncer fires bouncing bombs that you can kick into enemies. All the weapons have chargeable alternate-fire modes that render them even more deadly – for example, the Boneduster alt-fires a volley of flaming bullets that vaporise any flesh in their path.

In conjunction with the weaponry, you get an upgradable leash which lets you pull enemies towards you or, when you level it up, whiplash them up into the air. Plus, you get powerful kick and slide moves – all of which, when administered, cause a slowing down of time and a temporary suspension of gravity. Combine all those attributes together, and you reach the very essence of Bulletstorm: spectacular combos which earn you different amounts of points. You might, for example, pull an enemy towards you, then kick him into a cactus or an exploding dustbin, or kick a bouncing bomb into a plant and poison group of assailants. Each combo has its own, wryly amusing, name, and the more stylish the moves you conjure up, the more points you get, which in turn yield upgrades, alt-fire ammo and so on.

Visually, Bulletstorm won’t be mistaken for any other game: lush, colourful vegetation has permeated everywhere, even the abandoned cities. And there’s a deeply addictive multiplayer mode, too, in which up to four people take on waves of enemies, Horde-style. In order to progress, they must pass a points threshold, so co-operation is the name of the game: there’s even a move in which all four players leash an enemy and pull him apart. If you like your games larger than life and thoroughly overblown, then you’ll be needing a copy of Bulletstorm.

4.0 out of 5 stars For those stuck at verification screen! 5 July 2011

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Just a handy bit of advice.
I contacted EA customer support after getting stuck at the verification screen (after having installed the game). After an hour of waiting on the live chat service, they told me to "press enter" on the verification screen. The game then immediately verified and proceeded to play.
Also, the game is very enjoyable in my opinion.
Hope this helps!

4.0 out of 5 stars A definite grower 28 Feb 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I've just completed this game, so am writing the review based on the entire single player campaign. I haven't tried multiplayer so won't be commenting on that.

Lets get the nasty bit out of the way first. This game requires Games for Windows Live. I had a mare getting that up to date a couple of months ago when I was playing Bioshock 2. Consequently, I didn't have any trouble this time around. However, I see from other reviews that it has been an issue for some people. All I can suggest is that before you install the game, make sure your system is up to date, then be prepared for a couple of reboots as GFWL sorts itself out. Theres nothing complicated about the process. It is just time consuming.

Anyway, now that that is out of the way, what is the game itself like? Imagine you are in the movie of a Marvel Comic Book, and you won't be far wrong. The dialog is cheesy as heck, and everything is completely OTT, however there is an underlying story that pulls you along nicely. You play the part of a wronged merc, out for revenge. You are stuck on a planet which used to be an adventure playground for the rich but which has become overrun by savages and mutants. All this is explained as the story progresses. You soon get some enhancements that bizarrely monitor your actions, and award you points depending on how you kill your foes. At first this seems a tad unbelievable, even if you have totally immersed yourself in the game world. However, it all gets explained when you get to about Act four, from memory. (There are seven acts in total, in a game that lasts approx 10 hours).

So, this skillshot system is immediately appealing, and immense fun. However, it soon gets quite boring. Had I written this review after the first act, I would have given this three stars at best, as the novelty soon wheres a bit thin. As you progress into the game though, you get access to more weapons, and some of these are a treat. You have a sniper rifle, and get this, you get to steer the bullet as it flies towards the target! How cool is that? Each weapon has two modes of firing. In the case of the sniper rifle, the charged up version goes one step further. Once you have shot somebody, you get to move that body around (all in slowtime) before letting it detonate, hopefully killing other baddies. So you can look through your scopes, spot a group of grunts, and fire a charge shot at the leader. Once hit, you can send the corpse above the others, and explode it, killing them too, for bonus points.

Oh yes, bonus points. These are awarded for a variety of reasons. Obviously you get points for killing people creatively (so drag somebody towards you, kick them away and shoot them midair into a cactus for mega points, etc), but you also get points for killing newsbots, certain actions, and there are reflex bonuses where if you respond to the "Hold Right Mouse Button" quickly enough, you get points. And what do points make? Well, not quite prizes, but they allow you to get more ammo, and upgrade the capacity of your weapons.

Health is a simple affair. If you get shot too much, hide until you recover. There are no health packs to worry about. In some games this would be a downer. However, in this game it fits. This game is all about having mindless fun.

Once you have enough weapons to give you a bit of choice in proceedings, the game settles to a very enjoyable gore fest. Because though you have eight weapons to choose from, you can only carry three at a time. You shouldn't stick to just three weapons though, as each weapon has its own unique methods of getting bonus points. This encourages to try everything at least once. An example of this is once again the sniper rifle. I loved using this, however, as a result I got very few bonus points for killing with it (familiarity breeding contempt I guess).

As I said before, the game itself is about ten hours long. This is fairly short, but seems to be getting to be the norm rather than the exception these days. There is a lot to do in that ten hours though. A lot of it is derived from old games, however there are enough novelties to keep you interested, should you make it past the first act. For instance, at one point you get to control a life sized rocket shooting dinosaur robot, having previously been chased by it through a model city. Boring? Not a bit of it.

Once you have finished the game, you can reply sections (as Echoes) and this adds to the game, as now you have definate target scores to achieve. (Eg, clear the level in four minutes etc). There is multiplayer too, but I haven't bothered with that yet.

Graphics and sound are good without being awesome. The good news here is that you won't need a ninja PC to run it. The bad news is that you won't be able to use it to show off your ninja PC if you have one, as there is nothing spectacular. However, given the comic book theme, photorealism is not a requirement. The game is also pretty stable. I only had one crash while playing it. It minimises to desktop should you need to use the PC for something else, and restores without throwing a hissy fit.

All in all, this is a great game. I won't give it five stars, partly because it is short, and partly because it uses GFWL. Were it available on budget it would earn an easy five stars. So if you are reading this in a year's time then go for it without question. If you are reading it as a possible new release purchase, then I would say buy it unless you are on a budget. The price will definately drop soon (this always happens these days) and the fun elements of this game will still be fun in a month's time.

Good dirty fun!

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
If there's one trend on Amazon that I really tire of, it's people who decide to review something when it doesn't work on their pc, be it because of DRM or a badly-built pc. Now, I can understand if it's a worldwide DRM/Compatibility problem, but hey, guys! You do know you're supposed to review the game? NOT the company? Besides, if it's only you with the problem, like a minor install/graphics problem, then unless you're certain you're not the only one, don't write the review!

Just to provide some integrity, I will be honest here - I would prefer it if Microsoft got their stupid hands off of games like this and left the single-player gamers to their own devices, particularly with Steam games that use the service like Section 8: Prejudice. Yeah, you can call me a conservative imbicele (Even though technically the word actually refers to not changing anything if changes are unnecessary), you can call me an oldie all you like, but the thing is, the Games For Windows Live service just makes the whole thing feel too much like a slower, bulkier XBOX Live. We do not want that in our games!

Sorry, I'm going off on a tangeant here. Onto the actual game.

The design philosophy of Polish Developer People Can Fly started off as harkening back to the days of mindlessly fun shooters which were mindless in that cheery bullet-absorbing Doom/Wolfenstein/Serious Sam way rather than that dull, repetitive chest-high walls Gears of War 1/Kane And Lynch way. This was proven when their debut title, Painkiller, gained a ravenous cult following. Since then, they've worked on the PC version of Gears of War, and have now come out with this brand new title which aims to bring back the older style once again.

Ok, so the chest-high walls thing is still there, for better or for worse, but the sheer number of ways to take out an enemy is very good fun, be it kicking them into a giant cactus, lassooing them off a cliff or into a lake of piranhas, separating their legs from their torso with a single shotgun blast, or best yet, attatching a remote detonator to them, kicking them into a group of enemies and detonating the device, letting many a body part fly. As for the environments you fight in, although the chest-high wall thing does get repetitive, the sheer number of different settings on this abandoned holiday resort you fight in makes for some very memorable scenarios. All this runs at a very nice pace, even on the lowest graphics settings. I am not making this up - even when the graphics are turned down, the game still looks very nice.

There are one or two things I can complain about. Firstly, the sniper rifle is very poorly designed. Someone please explain to me the logic of the rifle only firing in scoped mode if locked onto an enemy, and someone further explain why the targeting system of said sniper rifle only locks onto enemies if you point it at them in a very, VERY specific way. This may sound like I'm nitpicking, but it nearly stopped my progress at a moment when it should have been obvious what to do, so a patch on that obviously broken mechanic shouldn't go amiss. The other complaint I have is that it can get a little repetitive, even with the multiplayer mode in tow, but hey, if mindless violence with the occasional callforward to the duller modern shooters (Bar the occasional exception such as Team Fortress 2, Dark Void and Left 4 Dead) is the route they're going for, then I'd say give this one a go. Just don't buy it second hand, as GFWL is definitely an irritating procedure.
