Was not sure what to expect when I saw this due for release on 14/02/11 - Did I really want 5cd's of sitar based music?!!! Then I thought that they can't all contain the sound of the sitar, much like many of the so called Psych music compilations you buy, some of the tracks you would call Psych music at all!
Anyway, went ahead with the purchase as I have always been pleased with the Past & Present box sets that I have bought previously.
Was I pleased I bought this set! There are not many {if any}5 cd box sets that I have listened to in their entirety in one session. I was totally captivated by the many different types of music & yes every track has a sitar on it!
It was such a refreshing sound & because the tracks sometimes are difficult to pigeon hole i.e. is this folk, blues, hard rock, psychedelia or what makes it so interesting. Sometimes also, the tracks themselves take you in many different directions from where they started from which I suppose is why I was so captivated & enthralled.
I am sure I am going to listen to this set again & again & still find new things on it many months from now.
The title is a bit clumsy sounding though, Psych sitar headswirlers sounds alot better to me still it the music here that matters & if you have an open mind you will love this set its quality music all the way.

I've been swirled!! 17 Feb 2011
The most delightful music purchases of them all are those that you gamble on. You know, the ones where you don't know exactly what you're getting. I'm a bit of an addict for that type of thing with many disastrous results over the years , but when you stumble across a gem by accident it makes all the mistakes seem worthwhile. This 5 CD set is very much a joy and revelation to listen to. I've played the entire set twice already and it was only released 3 days ago!
I agree entirely with " Peter the painter's " review and without repeating everything he has already said, I have to say that the variety of styles present is astounding. The sitar is a lovely sounding instrument and if like me, you like it enhancing western music like psychedelic rock & pop, acid folk and trippy celestial soundscapes, then I thoroughly recommend this. I can't believe how few of the artists I've actually heard of before, but then I felt that way when I first bought " Nuggets" 30 years ago and that turned out to be my favourite compilation ever.
This 5CD set, by my early impressions, is going to be right up there with that legendary album.

What more can I say, this must be the ultimate release to date from Past and Present. For lovers of sitar in Western music it's a breath-taking compilation than sends the listener on an incredible musical trip through different lands and times. While I already have over a dozen of these songs on other compilations and albums, there's still plenty of new material here that the average psych fan probably won't have. I'm sure I'll soon be checking out a few of these artists in more detail to see what else they got up to. Sound quality is great throughout. As a personal tip for a great sitar psych album, check out Bobby Callender's magnificent but rather unknown album Rainbow from 1968. It sadly flopped on release and quickly disappeared into obscurity. Two of the tracks are included here, but the whole thing is fantastic. A big thank to the compilers of this amazing box set.
