Ectogram are one of a new breed of bands who are not afraid to plough their own furrow away from the glare of fashion and media. I first picked up on them when I heard a split CD they did with Fuxa a few years back. It intrigued me enough for me to search out their own back catalogue. This is their 4th album and is probably their best yet and one of the most original releases of the past year. Despite this, Electric Deckchair has inexplicably failed to make an impression on any of the seasonal "best of the year" lists.
A double CD, it brings to mind classic extended 70s albums like Amon Duul II's "Yeti" or Can's "Tago Mago", utilising the extra space to stretch out and try new ideas, knowing that if one falls flat there's another one coming along soon. The songs vary in length from 2 minute (almost) pop songs to 20 minute improvisations all within a kind of blowtorch psychedelia that suggests the afore-mentioned Amon Duul jamming with Sonic Youth or at times, Shellac. I also detected hints of Five Foot Hose and Comus, yet Ectogam's sparse instrumentation, just two guitars and drums, keep the record from sliding into leaden retro-prog territory, while singer Ann Matthews' voice acts as a focus in some of the more "out there" passages.
All in all a highly recommended album (as are the band's other releases) for anyone willing to venture outside the neatly packaged market-led genre pigeon holes. File under "uncategorisable"
